Andy Kindler Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood

On Saturday, June 6 we had ourselves a time at Amoeba Hollywood! With Pride weekend around the corner, this month's charity auction recipient was the Los Angeles LGBT Center. Our neighbors in Hollywood, the LA LGBT Center is the world’s largest provider of programs and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. As with all our charity auctions, we matched all winning bids which doubled the money raised for the center's incredibly important youth programs.

We teamed up with the awesome folks at NerdMelt for this auction and guest host Andy Kindler made us laugh out loud while keeping the bids on fire. Andy Kindler is known in comedy circles as a troublemaker. Originally from New York, and now complaining from California, he annoys people all over the world. Andy has been a frequent guest and correspondent for The Late Show with David Letterman. Each summer at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal he delivers the State of the Industry address to a packed ballroom filled with comics and Hollywood industry types. Andy currently recurs on Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, IFC’s Maron and FOX’s hit animation series, Bob’s Burgers. Andy is spot on hilarious and he drove the bids up while keeping the audience and shoppers in stitches. There were outright guffaws and, much to his chagrin, he didn't annoy anybody! Good times. Good fun.

Here are some of the highlights of the items scored by our faithful Amoeba Auction-goers:

Jimmy Pardo at Amoeba Hollywood

On Saturday, November 1 we had an amazing charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood featuring a repeat appearance by comedian Jimmy Pardo as our illustrious guest auctioneer! We were raising funds for Smile Train, an organization that provides free cleft repair surgeries to those in need while helping to train local doctors. This makes it possible for a child born with cleft to eat, breathe, speak properly, and smile.

Jimmy Pardo is host of the top-rated podcast "Never Not Funny," and a recurring guest on Conan and Comedy Bang Bang. Jimmy did a bang-up job as usual, making people giggle and guffaw while driving the bids to new levels. His timing is impeccable and his one-liners irresistible. The crowd was way into it, and the folks showed up with their wallets and pocketbooks open. And when they weren't quite open enough, he helped pry them open with quippity quips. Recap: May Charity Auction for Sweet Relief at Amoeba Hollywood

Sweet Relief

On Saturday, May 3, just a few days before Cinco De Mayo, we had a wonderful auction with one of our absolute favorites, Gustavo Arellano. The beneficiary for this auction was the outstanding organization Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, now in its twentieth year of providing financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability or age-related problems. In other words, Healing Musicians in Need. We all have received so much out of music, it was time to give a little back!

Gutavo ArellanoGustavo Arellano is the editor of OC Weekly, author, lecturer, and the nationally syndicated “¡Ask a Mexican!” columnist. This was a return engagement for Gustavo as our auction host and he outdid himself. We were so excited to have him back, and he definitely delivered, putting together some crazy packages (a signed Charo CD along with a Nick Cave toy, or a Star Wars Toy with a Cumbia CD), and holding the audience rapt with his rapid-fire auction patter. And he made sure everyone understood that every bid had meaning, making jokes all the while driving the bids up and up.

As always, Amoeba matches each and every bid. We started the Auction tradition when Katrina hit the Southland in 2005, and we have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local and global organizations in the last nine years. We have raised money for so many worthy organizations; from Doctors Without Borders disaster relief to NKLA and many more. It's a huge part of our community efforts and we appreciate so much the people who come out to support, and our guest auctioneers over the years (who have included Bob Odenkirk, Garfunkel and Oates, David Cross, and many other comedians and luminaries). Check out our auction page for a deeper list.

Recap: March Charity Auction at Amoeba Hollywood to Benefit New Orleans

Brently Heilbron at Amoeba Hollywood charity auction

Amoeba Hollywood was the place to be on a rainy Los Angeles afternoon in March. Our pal, Brently Heilbron, made for the most hilarious stream-of-pop-consciousness hour ever! And it was all for a cause that has special meaning to us as we were raising money for two New Orleans charities.

tiptina's and NOMAF logosOur March charity auction benefitted the ongoing work still needed in New Orleans via two amazing organizations, Tipitina's Foundation and the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation (NOMAF). Their services grew even more vital out of the damage done during Hurricane Katrina and they both continue to do great work with and for the musicians in New Orleans. The rich musical and cultural heritage of New Orleans is a unique part of the core of American music--from Jazz to Rock and Roll; from Country to Hip-Hop. We encourage you to learn more about what they do and the musicians they've helped.

Mr. Heilbron, the original host (and originator) of our charity auctions, made a triumphant return appearance at our auction on Saturday, March 1, sending the rain-drenched onlookers into peels of laughter with his random delightful musings. Musings about such things as the political and social impact of the greatest movie of all time (Goonies) and the best band of all time (Spin Doctors) and everything in between. His encyclopedic knowledge of music and pop culture made for grins and giggles as he regaled the crowd and hyped up a slew of wonderful items. The crowd ate it up!
