There are a lot of songs on the topic of fools and even more songs on being in love. But for today, April Fool's Day, I have assembled some random songs about both - about fools in love or people falling foolishly into love. We've all been there and done that and hence can relate, no doubt, to the selection of songs I've assembled below (via YouTube) about fools in love.

Included is the song "Fools In Love" by Joe Jackson - the single off his great album Look Sharp in which he cynically muses, albeit from first hand experience, on: "Fools in love, are there any creatures more pathetic? Fools in love, never knowing when they've lost the game." Other songs about fools in love include the 1956 #1 hit from the very young Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" (a live TV rendition from 1956 from WNEW's The Frankie Lane Show with a funny interview beforehand). The song, which has been covered by folks such as Diana Ross and Joe Ely, poses that eternal question: "Why do fools fall in love?"  Also below is Journey-man Steve Perry's 80's pop rock ballad mega-hit "Foolish Heart" (off his Street Talk LP) and Rod Stewart's version of Elvin Bishop's hit "Fooled Around And Fell In Love."

For those of you currently not in the Bay Area let me report that the weather here has been pretty crappy of late with lots of wet days disrupting peoples' outdoor activity plans. Over the past week, for example, it has rained five out of seven days and seemingly always in the morning right as I'm trying to head outdoors on my bicycle. Not fun.  Saturday morning's heavy downfall put a damper on a lot of Bay Area festivals, street fairs, and outdoor events including the Berkeley World Music Festival which, even though it has a "rain or shine" policy, resulted in many vendors backing out at the last minute.

Luckily it didn't disrupt everything since many of the festival's events were also indoors including the Amoeba Berkeley in-store with Mamadou & Vanessa. Other East Bay events I attempted to attend over the weekend but couldn't due to weather included Shady Nate's canceled community BBQ in DeFrermery Park in West Oakland and yesterday's Temescal Sreet Fair in North Oakland which was,according to organizers, "postponed due to an inclement weather forecast" until July 10th.



I know that rain is good for the environment and California water supplies sure can use a good back up of H2O. But personally I can't stand the rain, especially in June when I'm all ready for good outdoor weather. But I do like the song of the same name and for some reason it always pops into my head on rainy days.  Hence I've been humming "I Can't Stand The Rain" a lot lately and thought I would do a run down of some of the different versions of this much covered song that was first recorded by Ann Peebles in 1973 who co-wrote it with Don Bryant & Bernard "Bernie" Miller.

Tim (or Timmy) Cappello is heavily-muscled, oiled and pelvis-thrusting American saxophonist, whose saxual stylings can be heard on the Tina Turner tracks "We Don't Need Another Hero" and "One of the Living" from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, as well as his cover of "I Still Believe" from The Lost Boys.

Cappello was born May 3, 1955 in Silver Lake, New York (as with LA's neighborhood of the same name, properly spelled with two words). Cappello not only plays the saxophone, but also the harmonica, guitar, keyboards and drums. His professional career began working with comedian/Oscar host Billy Crystal, providing musical accompaniment for Crystal's comedy stylings. 

In addition to playing in Tina Turner's band from 1984 to 1999, he recorded with Robert Kraft & Ivory Coast, The Flirts, Carly Simon, Eric Carmen, Peter Gabriel, Karen Carpenter and Ringo Starr. After appearing in the video for "We Don't Need Another Hero," Cappello embarked on an acting career, appearing in Miami Vice (1987), The Equalizer (1987), Hearts of Fire (1987), Tap (1989), and What's Love Got to Do With It (1993), but no role was as memorable as his cameo in The Lost Boys (1987). The scene of him covering a song by The Call on the beach was, to my mind, the most frightening part of the film.

A few months back I got a real chuckle out of friend who has years of experience working some big time gigs at a couple of major labels. He thought the sticker blog featuring multiple Janet Jackson stickers was a riot.  He had helped with the albums design, including the stickers, but really didn't recall designing different stickers for it.  Here's a whole gallery of sticker variations, none of which are as fun as the Janet example, but they do provide anecdotal details regarding the chronology of hits, attempted hits, awards, milestones etc...

Ike Turner died in his sleep Tuesday night.


Ike will no doubt be remembered for his contributions to Rock n Roll in its infancy.

He will also no doubt be remembered for beating and abusing his one-time wife, Tina Turner.
