10 music gift ideas

Got a tween or teenager’s to shop for? Looking to expand their musical horizons? Check out some of our music recommendations!

If they like Nicki Minaj or Iggy Azalea, check out Shamir’s Ratchet.

shamirLike Ms. Minaj, Shamir can sing, rap and makes dance music with a healthy dose of sass. Shamir’s androgynous style speaks to how kids are throwing out old notions of gender and stereotypes, thanks to teen idols like Miley Cyrus taking that bull by the horns. But Shamir’s lyrics are actually a lot less raunchy than either Minaj’s or Cyrus’, making him a better choice for younger teens.

If they like Lana Del Rey (and speak Spanish), check out Carla Morrison’s Amor Supremo.

taylor swift ryan adams

One of the most prolific and idiosyncractic songwriters of his generation has covered an entire album from one of the most ubiquitous pop stars of her generation, and soon you can own the results on LP or CD!

ryan adams taylor swift 1989 album lpRyan Adams' full-album cover of Taylor Swift's megaselling 1989 album was an welcome surprise, as Adams filtered Swift's maximalist radio pop into his world-weary Americana style. The album will be released by Blue Note on CD Oct. 30 and on LP Dec. 11.

Reviews for the album have been overwhelmingly positive, with Entertainment Weekly's Leah Greenblatt claiming, "If turning the biggest, shiniest pop record of the past year into a survey course in classic rock economy sounds like a novelty, it is. Cameron Carpenter

Known for his vibrant flare in music and fashion, Cameron Carpenter is taking an ancient instrument to unconventional places. Praised and simultaneously criticized for his use of electronic organs, Carpenter is often referred to as a virtuoso for his unorthodox interpretations of standard organ arrangements. The classically trained organist earned two degrees from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York and he holds the distinction of being the first organist to be nominated for a GRAMMY award. His International Touring Organ show features a digital organ designed by Carpenter.

Cameron Carpenter visited Amoeba Hollywood recently to do a little shopping and to dispel some common misconceptions about Classical musicians. Cameron kicks off his What's In My Bag? episode with a copy of Wiz Khalifa's Deal Or No Deal and follows that up with Breakfast by Chiddy Bang. A huge fan of film scores and soundtrack composers, Cameron digs up a copy of Citizen Kane by Bernard Herrman. Watch the full episode below to hear Cameron explain why it's important for Classical musicians to know what's going on in popular music, from Hip Hop to Taylor Swift and everything in between.

The Guns N’ Roses singer came in at No. 1, meaning he has the widest recorded range.

It’s fun to see Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and others represented pretty well on the list—did you know Lana Del Rey’s recorded vocal range is three octaves, dwarfing Taylor Swift’s two-and-change? Or that Eminem has a recorded range of more than three octaves?
