Aesop Rock "ZZZ Top" (2012)

Hip-Hop Top 5 Week ending 7/12/12

1) Aesop Rock Skelethon (Rhyemsayers Ent.)

2)  El-P Cancer4Cure (Fat Possum)

3) Killer Mike R.A.P. Music (Williams Street)

4) J Dilla Rebirth of Detroit (Yancey Music Group)

5) Azealia Banks 1991 EP (Interscope)

Like El-P, whose Cancer4Cure is his first album since 2007, another hip-hop artist who can patiently keep fans waiting five years before dropping a new album is Aesop Rock. And this week Aesop Rock, who used to be on El-P's currently on hiatus Def Jux label, returns triumphantly after half a decade between albums with a stellar new full-length: Skelethon on Rhymesayers Entertainment.. The album does not disappoint with powerful songs like "ZZZ Top" (video above), the opening “Leisureforce,” “Homemade Mummy,” and the lead single “Zero Dark Thirty.” With Aesop's usual barrage of intricate lyrics luckily the physical release comes with a lyrics sheet. Another new release this week is a re-release of an older hip-hop album: The Pharcyde's 1992 Bizarre Ride II: The Pharcyde [Expanded Edition] which differs from the original two-decade old classic in that it is a triple disc set with the original album in its entirety, plus two additional discs including instrumentals, remixes, and “B-cydes” plus really nice packaging that include some classic old photos of the legendary SoCal hip-hop crew and enlightening liner notes from producer J-Sw!ft.  And in honor of this most welcome reissue/extended set here is one of the great tracks from that hip-hop classic: "Passin' Me By,"

Vote Now & Nominate Your Fave New Bay Area Hip-Hop Artist for the Bay Area Freshmen 10 Class of 2012

Posted by Billyjam, May 9, 2012 05:18pm | Post a Comment

Hey Bay Area hip-hop fans: there's still time left to nominate your favorite new Bay Area hip-hop artist in the prestigious Bay Area Freshmen 10 Class of 2112  that will determine who will follow in the footsteps of such previous winners as  Kreayshawn, Roach Gigz, Moe Green, and DaVinci. The cut off date for nominations is May 21st and just before then, on May 17th, there will be an invite only Bay Area Freshmen 10 "tastemaker mixer" event at which local journalists, DJs, producers, and tastemakers, including myself representing the Amoeblog, will gather at SOM Bar in San Francisco and further review many of the nominees and prepare to post our collective votes based on the sum of nominations from Bay Area hip-hop fans who've been submitting their picks for best new artists from the Bay either online @ Thizzler's website or else via Twitter or Facebook.

Not surprisingly, like all music industry awards, the Bay Area Freshmen 10, the annual hip-hop by the Bay event that presents awards to the the most noteworthy & promising ten up-and-coming rap/hip-hop artists, is both embraced and dismissed. Those who don't make the cut dismiss it saying it doesn't really make any difference to sales or their careers while those who are lucky to make the grade lavish praise upon the institution and make a point of including their win in every press release they send out. But whatever side of the fence you are on, and provided you are somehow interested in Bay Area rap/hip-hop music, you should weigh in and nominate your favorite new Bay Area hip-hop talent.

Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five Week Ending 12:16:11

1) The Roots Undun (MCA)

2) Drake Take Care (Cash Money/Universal)

3) Pusha T Fear of God II: Let Us Pray (Fontana)

4) Eligh & Amp Live Therapy At 3 ( Legendary Music/Live Up/Traffic)

5) J Cole Cole World (Columbia)

Special thanks to Ray Ricky Rivera at the Amoeba Music Hollywood store for this week's Amoeba Hip Hop Chart which includes staples of the past few weeks Drake's Take Care on Cash Money/Universal, J Cole's Cole World on Columbia Records, Pusha T's Fear of God II: Let Us Pray Fontana, and Eligh & Amp Live's Therapy At 3 via Legendary Music/Live Up/Traffic. Meantime the number one hip-hop seller is the brand new album from The Roots Undun which was released last week (December 6th). Undun is the Roots' eleventh studio album but it is their first concept album. As outlined in the Undun preview video above that concept follows the life and times of the fictional young Redford Stephens - "a kid who becomes criminal, but wasn't born criminal" and who is "neither victim nor hero."  As the online Amoeba reviewer accurately wrote of Undun: "Don’t let their spot as Jimmy Fallon’s house band fool you — The Roots haven’t softened one bit. Their latest release is a concept album about a youth drawn into street life until it results in his death, told in reverse. Despite all the inherent bleakness that would imply, lyrically, musically Undun is not so dour, buoyed by vibrant soul and touched by flourishes both electronic and orchestral that suggest how far the Roots have come as a band and as conductors of a sound they alone seem to inhabit.

Kreayshawn Gets Parodied In New "Fishy Fishy" Video

Posted by Billyjam, August 25, 2011 06:06pm | Post a Comment
Kreayfish "Fishy Fishy (Gucci Gucci Parody)" (August 2011)

You know you've arrived (or perhaps about to pass your peak) once you start getting parodied. Such is the case with white female rapper Kreayshawn and her extended Oakland crew, The White Girl Mob, whose recent viral meteoric rise to fame c/o her YouTube hit "Gucci Gucci" has been made fun of in the new video "Fishy Fishy (Gucci Gucci Parody)" by the artist "Kreayfish." The video, which was uploaded to YouTube by the LA-based LoudVillage just yesterday may only have a little over 300 views so far, but odds are that this number will snowball over the coming days as word trickles out on the funny parody.

Meanwhile, the original "Gucci Gucci" video (see below) is up to almost 13 million YouTube views in a little over 3 months. The artist, who was virtually unheard of back in early May, now boasts a $1 million deal with SONY/Columbia Records plus a nomination for an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. The MTV VMAs are in LA this Sunday evening. Kreayshawn will be in the house and also outside on the red carpet where she'll host the network's Red Carpet Report for MTV.com.
