Two New Videos Today: Lana Del Rey's "Ultraviolence" and Janelle Monae's "Electric Lady"

lana del rey ultraviolence videoTwo of our more exciting pop stars released new videos today.

Lana Del Rey has unveiled a video for the title track to her recently released Ultraviolence. Like the album itself, "Ultraviolence" hushes critics by revealing new layers to her gangster Nancy Sinatra sound, piling layers of Lana over gorgeous orchestration to paint a beautiful tapestry. Perhaps the Crystals-reffing lyrics are a bit silly—"give me all of that ultraviolence" isn't a particularly appealing line—but they sound good coming out of her mouth, and the music itself is immaculate. In this video, Del Rey engages in a soft-focus, Instragrammable wedding. It's typically campy but also sweet—the lone titillation comes from Del Rey licking her soon-to-be hubby's fingers, pretty tame by her standards. Check it out below:

janelle monae electric lady videoMeanwhile, Janelle Monae also released a video for the title track to her last album, the still-great Electric Lady. In it, Monae is hosting a party with like-minded ladies including Esperanza Spalding (who collaborates with Monae on the album's "Dorothy Dandridge Eyes"), Kimbra, T-Boz, Monica and Estelle. Rapper T.I. also makes a cameo. I don't see her cohort in this song, Solange—maybe she's still trying to lay low after that whole Beyonce/Jay Z/elevator thing. Still, looks like a fun party for a great tune. Anyone else need (not want) that skull record player?

Check Out Karen O's New Video For "Rapt"

karen o rapt videoYeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O has a new video for the song "Rapt," which will be on her forthcoming first solo album, Crush Songs. You can download the song now on Amoeba.com, and you can preorder the album on LP now.

Directed by her husband, Barney Clay, the gorgeous video shows Karen O underwater in slow motion, occasionally illuminated and sometimes obscured. I recommend pausing every now and then; each shot seemingly could be an impressionist painting.

Check out the video below:

Joanna Newsom covers Sandy Denny's "North Star Grassman and the Ravens" for Wren

We've caught neither peep nor lead regarding a follow up to Joanna Newsom's 2010 Have One On Me triple LP the future Mrs. Andy Samberg has been making news recently, case in point. Last year a couple of new songs, "Look and Despair" and "The Diver's Wife", were caught during two live different live performances in San Francisco and subsequently released into the wild, as happens more often that not in this increasingly borderless world of oversharing we live in (no complaints here). After dangling the carrot that was the announcement of a video shoot to showcase the jaunty, up-beat "Good Intentions Paving Company" music video in June of 2011 and later, in March 2012, the shaved vignette of a preview for the clip (as one comment sardonically pointed out, "this video is practically the indie Chinese Democracy") it feels good to finally see something new from Lady Jo, even if the newness is a "fashion video" for the Fall/Winter 2013 collection of Los Angeles based clothing line Wren, and the song is not new material but rather a Sandy Denny cover (again, no complaints whatsoever).

Dregs One Unveils Latest in Long Line of Hip-Hop Videos Shot At Amoeba Music

Dregs One's "Pushin'" video was shot at Amoeba SF Saturday, edited yesterday, & released today

With the release today of his Leo Docuyanan filmed video for "Pushin'" San Francisco hip-hop artist Dregs One is the latest in a long line of hip-hop artists to feature the San Francisco Amoeba Music store in their music videos - a list that includes such hip-hoppers as Drake and Equipto to name but a couple.  But unlike those and most others who typically feature quick shots/edits of Amoeba in their music videos Dregs One's entire video is shot on location at Amoeba SF - both inside and outside the Haight Street, San Francisco store.  Today I reached out to the talented young MC/producer to ask him about the video shoot; how long it took and how the experience was shooting at Amoeba?

"Well basically I shot the video on Saturday, edited it on Sunday [yesterday], uploaded it on Monday [today]. The entire filming process took about 10 minutes, we only did one other shot before the one we used in the video," said Dregs One of the incredibly fast turnaround in this production, noting that. "All the staff was real cool about us filming in there, and I've been going to that store since I was a kid so it was an honor for me to be able to do a video at Amoeba."

While, as seen in the opening shots of the video above where he is digging in the Amoeba CD hip-hop section, Dregs One's music is available for sale at Amoeba this song "Pushin" is actually a free giveaway track on the free download The Inspiration mixtape from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?6225tj96e6ydkyu or here http://dregs1.bandcamp.com. As for what lies ahead in 2012 for the always productive Dregs One who was interviewed here on the Amoeblog over the past year on two occasions here and here, he told me that, "Right now I'm planning to go on a benefit tour where proceeds from each show go to a local nonprofit organization in each city. That's going to start in late May. I don't want to say too much about my next project but I'm planning on doing an EP with a very special producer and putting it out for free download and vinyl." Stay tuned for updates here on the Amoeblog. Meantime follow Dregs One via his Facebook page and.or on the Dregs1 website.

The Ever-Prolific DJ Swamp Shooting New Music Video Today in Riverside, CA

DJ Swamp "Invasion of the B-Girls" (2011)

Ever since DJ Swamp first arrived on the music scene in 1996, when the unique long-haired turntablist with an affinity for setting his turntables on fire in his performances took the national DJ battle title of USA DMC Champion (his first year in the contest!), he has remained both an ever-engaging figure and a most prolific artist. Over the past dozen-plus years, the Cleveland-born/West Coast-based turntable artist/producer/vocalist has been mad busy consistently performing live (both solo and with others; many first got introduced to him as Beck's DJ) and recording a slew of solo projects, including his excellent Never Ending Drum & Bass Loops album series and many other DJ skratch tools vinyl releases (all self-released on his own Decadent Records label). DJ Swamp has also collaborated with or made cameos for a long list of other artists including the likes of his old touring mate Beck,  Kool Keith, RL Burnside, Devo, StickY fingaz, Kid Rock, Crystal Method, BT, Hanson, Richard Humpty Vission, The Bloodhound Gang, Morcheeba, Ill Kid, The Dandy Worhals, and Faithless.

Most recently, the DJ has been especially prolific cranking out music videos and, having released the new album Vinyl Disciple earlier this year, a new series of videos to accompany this rock-tinged, hip-hop/electro/breakbeat driven skratch album. Just last Friday, he unleashed the above video for the new album's song "Invasion of the B-Girls," which comes hot on the heels of numerous other music videos he made this year, including "Rock Rollin," the new album's title track, and "Pyro," which were all completed in the past few months. Today (Wednesday, August 17th) he is shooting yet another music video! This one is for "Feast of Flesh," also off the new Vinyl Disciple album.
