sun kil moon mark kozelekmadlibst. vincentIt is now almost exactly halfway through 2014! It’s time to look back on the last six months and see what’s it’s had to offer music-wise. There’s already been a bunch of great records released this year, including a couple of excellent ones released just this week. If you haven’t checked these out, they’re all worth getting—pick ’em all up and catch up on what you’ve been missing.

Sun Kil Moon Benji

sun kil moon benji lpSome people write memoirs. Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek write songs crammed with details, from a brutal story about a distant cousin’s death by a freak fire to mundane details about Panera bread and sports bar shit on the walls, that somehow come together to form something called a life. Just when you feel like the songs are too stuffed to keep up, Kozelek will let his breathy “sadcore” folk open up and focus on a seemingly trivial line like “blue crab cakes” in the song “Ben's My Friend,” and in doing so perfectly captures the weird things that stick out in our heads when we reflect. Simply put, listening is like attending a master class in songwriting.

Freddie Gibbs and Madlib Complete Video Trilogy With "Deeper"

Posted by Billyjam, June 5, 2014 06:45am | Post a Comment

Part 3: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib "Deeper"  (from Piñata  2014)

Indiana emcee Freddie Gibbs and LA musician/DJ/producer extraordinaire Madlib, have just released a video for the song "Deeper" from their collaborative full-length Piñata (aka Cocaine Piñata) on Madlib Ivazion, which delivers Gibbs' 90's gangsta rap style and features guest spots from such artists as Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Domo Genesis, Scarface, and Mac Miller. The album topped each Amoeba store's hip-hop charts when it was released on CD and also on vinyl back in March. With the publication this week of the music video for the album track "Deeper" (above), they've completed the third part in the Jonah Schwartz-directed trilogy (admittedly a "loose" trilogy, says Schwartz) in which the "Deeper" video was preceded by two Gibbs/Madlib song videos "Thuggin'" and "Shame."

Peanut Butter Wolf To Celebrate DVD Release of Stones Throw Documentary Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton @ Amoeba Hollywood, May 28th

Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton poster "In thirty years I want to see Stones Throw records either in the $100 bin or in the 99 cents bin," says Peanut Butter Wolf in the engaging new Jeff Broadway directed documentary about his label Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton (This Is Stones Throw Records).  He hopes that he doesn't see releases from the now iconic label of his, that he humbly founded back in 1996, in "the $5 bin." It's got to be the 99 cents or a $100 bin, one or the other. "I want people to really hate it or really love it," he stresses.

Those future decade crate diggers the DJ/producer and label founder born Chris Manak imagines, whatever their music tastes might be, are bound to find lots to love from the totally unique and independent Stone Throw Records label's incredibly diverse and prolific roster boasting hundreds upon hundreds of titles released over the past 18 years - all with that instantly recognizable logo known and respected the world over. Shoot, forget all the music releases; even those ubiquitous Stones Throw logo turntable slip-mats have become synonymous with DJ culture of the past two decades - as has The Turntablist's (aka DJ Babu) highly revered 1996 Stones Throw battle record release Super Duck Breaks.
