Cass McCombs – “Brighter” (feat. Karen Black)

cass mccombsActress Karen Black died from cancer last month. Before she passed, she recorded this great song with singer Cass McCombs, who also dueted with Black on the memorable “Dreams-Come-True-Girl,” the opener to 2009’s Catacombs. In this song from the upcoming Big Wheel and Others, Black takes the lead, her voice sounding lively and wild. For fans of Black, this posthumous release is a beautiful gift. The 22-song Big Wheel and Others is due Oct. 15 on Domino, listen to “Brighter” below and “There Can Only Be One” here. McCombs will be at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown Nov. 12, L.A.’s The Echo Nov. 14 and S.F.’s Great American Music Hall Nov. 15.

Glasser – “Design” video

glasser interiorsThe video for the second single from L.A.-based Glasser’s upcoming Interiors album (preorder on CD or LP) features Glasser’s Cameron Mesirow in a futuristic Mad Men dress dancing with an animated sculpture. It reinforces the message: This is electro-pop fit for a museum, not just the dancefloor. Interiors is due Oct. 8 on True Panther/Matador.

They'll hit the Fillmore Aug. 15, Big Sur's Henry Miller Library Aug. 16 and L.A.'s The El Rey Aug. 17, all with Bleached (the rest of Best Coast's tour dates can be found on their site.). Local Bits: Grass Widow, Dante vs Zombies, Races Album Stream

Posted by Billy Gil, March 23, 2012 04:06pm | Post a Comment
Grass Widow – “Goldilocks Zone”

San Fran trio Grass Widow have a new album coming out May 22 on HLR called Internal Logic. The first song from it, “Goldilocks Zone,” sports the casual girl cool of The Breeders with a bit more post-punk angularity and noise-rock sound effects. Definitely excited to hear the full-length!

Dante vs Zombies – “Natural Disaster”

dante vs zombiesL.A.’s Dante vs. Zombies are set to release their first full-length April 10 from Neurotic Yell, called BUH. This is a band I wasn’t sure I’d like from reading about them, seeming kinda kitschy. Listening to “Natural Disaster,” I hear exquisitely polished, noir-ish indie rock with style to spare, reminding me a bit of another L.A. band, Fool’s Gold, and also recent Yeasayer. Plus singer Dante White-Aliano has killer pipes. Love the speed-up at the end. (Download via RCRDLBL.com)

Races – Full Album Stream

Races are a band I’ve written about a couple of times here as their sweeping orchestral pop showed major promise. Now their first full-length, Year of the Witch, is imminent, and they’ve put the whole thing up for streaming via SoundCloud. Sounds awesome!
