Pride Weekend Starts Early In The San Francisco Bay Area Including Mykki Blanco Concert Tonight

Mykki Blanco "Wavvy" (2012)

The big San Francisco Pride Parade 2013 may still be a few days away - Sunday, June 30th - but in the San Francisco Bay Area - similarly to other major metropolitan areas like New York City - the Pride celebrations are all weekend long with the Pride Weekend kicking into gear Thursday, today June 27th, with a bunch of parties and events including the Flamboyant Specimens at the Project Lab, Faetopia - the Pop-Up Queer Arts Festival at Noe and Market in the old Tower Records space, plus the talented rapper Mykki Blanco (pic left, video above) at the Mezzanine in San Francisco all happening later today. In fact Bay Area Pride 2013 celebrations began last night (Wednesday) in Oakland's Uptown district where Telegraph Ave near 19th was blocked off to traffic for the Hella Oakland Street Party: Gay Marriage Rally & Celebration - organized by the promoters of the long running, popular, (and ingeniously titled) Hella Gay Oakland party at the Uptown club in that same block. Note that the same proud promoters of the award winning "Oakland queer dance party" will be throwing their big Hella Gay party at the Uptown on Saturday which they are billing as "Beat the BART" and the "Dyke March Afterparty."

"The Monster Show" Headlines at "San Fransexual" Club Bootie SF's Pre-Pride Extravaganza Tonight at the DNA Lounge

Posted by Billyjam, June 16, 2012 02:24pm | Post a Comment
In celebration of this year's LGBT Pride Month and as a warm-up to next weekend's mega SF Pride Parade & festival celebrations the ever-active bookers at Bootie SF are presenting The Monster Show tonight at their DNA Lounge weekly party. "We are totally ready to get our gay on as Pride nears, and it doesn't get much gayer than The Monster Show," said the promoters of the popular, long-running weekly mashup party earlier this week.

At tonight's Bootie SF Pre Pride Party, in addition to the 11pm mashup drag extravaganza on the DNA main stage, Cookie Dough and the rest of the fun folks (who know how to party) from The Monster Show will also take over the upstairs area of the DNA when they will transform it into the Monster Electro-House Room. Described by the folks at Bootie as "unlike other drag shows, with breaks between the numbers, this is just one non-stop, mega-mixed show with a whole series of drag queens lip-syncing. You can watch the show and dance at the same time" The Monster Show at Bootie tonight should be hella fun.

Yesterday I reached out to The Monster Show's Cookie Dough to ask what to expect tonight at Bootie SF and for more insights into The Monster Show and its San Francisco history. "The Monster Show started in the Summer of 2004 at Harvey's in the heart of The Castro. At the time there were no other drag shows residing in The Castro, so we filled a much needed void of drag in The Pulse Of Gay Mecca," Cookie Dough told me. "What we have become known for are our non-stop continuous mixed shows; a sort of an assault-to-the-senses, created by co-founder and my DJ husband DJ MC2." Tonight DJ MC2 will be getting busy in the upstairs area of the DNA drawing from his three decades of turntable mixing history that Cookie Dough promised will be "a beat matched mix of house beats with some of todays hottest artists and remixers, along with a light show of lasers, fog, and dance lights moving with the energy of the room." Monster Party friend DJ Guy Ruben will also be spinning upstairs (set time 10:45pm to midnight). Meanwhile downstairs on the main stage from 11pm to 11:30pm, Cookie Dough said "We will give the Monster Bootie fans our 7th Annual Pride Show with Bootie; an in-your-face mash up of electrifying drag queens from all around San Francisco."

Um... eek.

This weekend, Los Angeles celebrates its main Gay Pride festival and I plan on being there. This may not seem like a stunning “news flash” to many of you, dear readers, but those who know me well know that I have a phobia of parades and balloons, I will not wait anything over 10 minutes for a table at any restaurant no matter how piquant their comestibles, nor will I eat standing up (and certainly not in a crowd!) and I’m allergic to most forms of fun – all of these are features of such events (or so I'm told).

But here’s another fact about me: I’ve never participated in any Pride activities in any city, any year, ever – and that strikes me as, well… queer. So this is the year I’m remedy it. I'm coming out! (...of my safe and cozy home.)

I need to go buy bottles of water and sun-block with an SPF of pi, but before I do, I wanted to get some mood music from our rich, LGBT heritage (see below). Beats make me braver!

And if you plan on coming to LA’s Pride, look for me. I’ll undoubtedly be cowering in some dark corner, terrified of everything, but doing it with a rad attitude.

New San Francisco Queer Pop Duo Hussyclub Arrive Via 3-D Video "Straight Girl"

Hussyclub "Straight Girl" (2012)

In honor of this year's Pride Month, the Amoeblog is running a series of posts celebrating various aspects of the LGBT community. This one salutes the talented new Bay Area queer electronic-pop duo Hussyclub, comprised of singer Glitterus and producer Critical Akklaim, who recently produced and unveiled the above song and video "Straight Girl." The self-described "San Francisco Dark Pop Fantasy Group" tag this dark fun video, which was directed by the group's singer with cameos from Zoe Bender and East Oakland turf dancers Jeriel Bey, Slow Motion, and Bam Ba of the Architekz fame, as a "3-D 80's Queer Matrix Sex Dance Spectaculum!!!!--about unleashing our truest desire, no matter how 'straight' you appear." Meanwhile they describe Hussyclub as, "a place for everyone to grind; queers, breeders, freqs, straight girls, hopefully simultaneously and wrapped in aluminum foil."

Yesterday, via email, I caught up with the two members of Hussyclub find out more about their unique new group.

Amoeblog: I could only find the "Straight Girl" song/video for Hussyclub. Is there more music available or on the way?

Hussyclub: "Straight Girl" is but the first desperation love-story you'll hear at the Hussyclub. We have songs of porno dreaming, ass smackin, alimony, husband snubbing, and lady loving all coming your way.

Amoeblog: Do you have to wear 3D glasses to fully appreciate the video?
