Giorgio Moroder Amoeba What's In My Bag?

"There is America, there is England, and there is Sweden, and slowly they are taking over." You heard it here first folks: Sweden is taking over the US and England! Well, at least according to legendary producer/artist Giorgio Moroder, as he talks about the incredible musical talent coming from the Scandinavian country. Amoeba San Francisco, recently had the pleasure of hosting a signing of the disco/electronic-music pioneer's latest album, Deja Vu. Beforehand, the affable Moroder went record shopping at the store and shared his picks with us.

In 1966 Moroder began releasing singles under the name Giorgio, working in studios in Berlin and Munich before beginning a long and fruitful partnership with musician/producer Pete Bellotte and disco diva Donna Summer for her debut LP, Lady of the Night. A year later Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" became an international hit.

Over the course of much of the '90s and '00s, Moroder scored video games, films, and worked on assorted non-musical projects. In 2013, he contributed to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories album. His most recent album, Deja Vu, features guest vocalists Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Charli XCX, Sia, and Kelis. Diane Warren at Amoeba Hollywood

"If you won't die if you don't do it, don't do it," Diane Warren, the GRAMMY, Oscar, and Golden Globe nominated songwriter told us on a recent visit to Amoeba Hollywood. As a teenager growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Warren was determined to become as respected a name in songwriting as Carole King or Jimmy Webb. In 1983 she found that success when she penned Laura Branigan's "Solitaire" and has since become one of America's most prolific and esteemed songwriters.

Over the course of her career Warren has worked with luminaries such as Whitney Houston, Cher, Celine Dion, Aerosmith, Elton John, Faith Hill, Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, and Mariah Carey. She has also worked with some of the biggest names in the modern pop music arena, including Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, LL Cool J and Keyshia Cole, and has been nominated for eight Academy Awards, five Golden Globes, and thirteen GRAMMYs. Diane Warren and Lady Gaga's "'Til It Happens To You" recorded for the documentary The Hunting Ground has been nominated for Best Original Song at this year's Academy Awards on February 28.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With New Order

New Order

New Order is often hailed as one the most influential bands of the '80s. They took their developing post-punk sound and combined it with electronic dance music, making them one of the pioneers of the newly coined "synthpop" era. The English band was formed in 1980 by the remaining members of Joy Division after the death of lead singer Ian Curtis. Gillian Gilbert (Stephen Morris' wife) was recruited to round out the new group, playing keyboards, guitar and synthesisers. New Order's EP, 1981-1982, received a nice all white vinyl reissue for Record Store Day last year. The pressing was limited to 3,500 in the U.S., but will be given an unlimited run in black vinyl this year! New Order signed with Mute Records in September 2014 and are working on their tenth studio album.

Founding members Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris sat down with our cameras at Amoeba Hollywood for another memorable What's In My Bag? episode. Gillian picks up a T-shirt by '70s rock legends Television. To Stephen's surprise the two realize they both love the band's debut album, Marquee Moon (Elektra). Stephen follows up with Fiesta Songs, a covers album by German producer Senor Coconut. It's got a great merengue cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and The Doors' "Riders On The Storm."  Stephen also digs up a copy of Desmond Dekker's classic The King Of Ska on vinyl. Gillian also picks up some pop favorites with Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence and Lady Gaga's The Remix, both on vinyl.

Kell's Best of 2013: A Year of Sounds and Feels

2013 was a pretty great year for music and nothing quite cures that "where did the time go?" feeling like recollecting a year's worth of music enjoyment with conclusive consideration and whittling it down to a year-end list of bests. For putting together this here post I decided to drag out all the records I bought since last Christmas, spread them out on the floor like tarot cards, and listen to each of them one by one, like this:

listening to music records cat gif aristocats disney

And then write about them, like this:
the office typing temp ryan michael scott steve carell i fucking love this show gif
The rub was trying to keep my list trim and fit thus accompanying my select "bests" are other titles I've enjoyed within the last twelve months. Happy New Year everyone! Peep my Best of 2013 on the downhill scroll...

- LAST
(RAD Records)

LAST comes first not just because I'm a longtime avid supporter of Kyle Field as an artist and musician, but it just so happens that LAST was one of the very first new records I bought in 2013. LAST is one of those "total package" records about which I could spin infinite yarns of praise n' things regarding the songwriting, the recording, the artwork, and total overall vibe and I kind of already did that in the interview piece I put together last Spring and so I urge anyone interested in this two-fer plate of odd hip-hop with a lotta folk-rockin' goin' on to check it out as it'd be redundant to put further shine on this diamond.
