Fred Armisen Fans Rejoice - With a Bird on It, Of Course

Fred Armisen

If Fred Armisen becomes any busier, he's going to have to be cloned! The actor is widely known for his comedic roles on Saturday Night Live and, more recently, for co-creating the sketch comedy series, Portlandia, but did you know that Fred Armisen is a bonafide rocker? Yes, it's true! To solidify his rock and roll credibility, Fred Armisen has now added "bandleader" to his resume. Armisen has assembled The 8G Band as the house band for the new Late Night with Seth Meyers television show. This reunites Armisen and Meyers, who both recently left longtime roles as cast members on Saturday Night Live. Armisen admirers might be surprised to learn he dropped out of visual art school to pursue a career as a drummer. He played drums in the band Trenchmouth, which was signed to East West Records in the '90s. Late night TV has never been so punk!

Being named band leader of Late Night would be the highlight of any musician's year, but it doesn't stop there. Portlandia is back! Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein kick off Season 4 tonight airing on the IFC network. Armisen wears many hats, including starring and writing for Portlandia!

Portlandia Season 4

Last year, we caught up with Fred while he was shopping at Amoeba San Francisco. He gave our cameras a sneek peak into the musical tastes of a funny man. He's got some great punk and rock selections on vinyl and he tells a very cool story about using tour money to buy records at Amoeba in the '90s!

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With Fred Armisen

Posted by Amoebite, June 13, 2013 04:45pm | Post a Comment

From music to acting, Fred Armisen does it all! Did you know Fred Armisen played drums for the '90s post-hardcore band Trenchmouth? Did you know he once played drums with the Blue Man Group? There is so much more to Fred Armisen than his SNL fame alludes to. He's a huge music buff and the Amoeba cameras caught up with Fred in our San Francisco store to take a look at what's in his bag. He's pretty eclectic in his musical taste and, of course, as a drummer he pays close attention to the beat. From world artist Joyce to oldies rockers The Turtles, Fred digs deep. Check it out!

Armisen is reportedly leaving Saturday Night Live, acording to the New York Post. But never fear - IFC just renewed Portlandia for two new seasons, so there will be plenty more sketch comedy to come from the actor. On May 18, Armisen's last night at SNL, he performed a musical number with his castmates Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Taran Killam. They were joined midway through by Portlandia co-creator Carrie Brownstein (Wild Flag, Sleater-Kinney), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), J. Mascis, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. Fred Armisen & Captain Sensible Surprise Amoeba!

Fred Armisen and Captain Sensible (from The Damned) surprised Amoeba Hollywood and passersby with an impromptu set in front of our store last night! Right around closing time, Armisen and the Captain, both with acoustic guitars in hand, broke out into song as a camera man filmed. This was a complete surprise to the Amoeba staff and we had no time to try and rally up our own film crew to capture the show! Luckily, one of our staff members recorded some cell phone footage of the performance. Thanks to Fred Armisen and Captain Sensible for the special surprise. That was very cool!

We made it onto The Simpsons last night! Or rather, Protozoa Records did... :) So rad. Thanks Matt Groening & co!!

The episode was called "The Day The Earth Stood Cool" and featured The Decemberists (who also wrote and recorded original music for the episode), Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, and Patton Oswalt. The A.V. Club posted a great review of the episode here.
