100 Famous Rock Guitar Riffs Offers Concise History of Rock N' Roll

Posted by Billyjam, July 17, 2012 10:00am | Post a Comment

Rock music has way too many incredibly memorable guitar riffs to limit a best of list to just one hundred, but the 100 riffs that guitarist Alex Chadwick of The Chicago Music Exchange came up with for the above video performance ain't half bad, and it is a nice informal overview of the history of rock n' roll. Sure it's a subjective selection that includes a lot of mega hits of the genre, and no doubt every rock fan could come up with their own unique list of a hundred best guitar riffs. But I like what Alex has done: from his playing to his choices of riffs, and from how he segues from song to song, to how he plays it on his 1958 Fender Strat all in chronological order. Below is that list of songs and artists in order with the artist names that are blue highlighted linking back to the Amoeba Online Store. where you can find their respective music (CDs, LPs, DVDs) including (in near all cases) the song played by Alex.

12 Song Soundtrack for Memorial Day BBQs & The Kick Off of Summer 2011

Posted by Billyjam, May 30, 2011 03:20pm | Post a Comment

With the smell of BBQs in the air this Memorial Day weekend and the kick off of the summer season that gladly brings with it the time to relax & kick back with family and friends, music steps up its role in playing a central theme in our lives. Hence this (subjective) summer song playlist culled from the literally thousands of great songs out there that celebrate summertime and  just hanging out in the sunshine in the park or backyard, or at the beach.

Here are a dozen personal faves (lots of classics) from the rap and pop categories culled from over the past several decades including Len's "Steal My Sunshine" (1999), Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince's "Summertime" (1991), Raewkon's "Ice Cream" (1995), The Foo Fighters' "Barbeque Song" that they did for an MTV special (2007), Mac Dre's "California Livin'" (1992), Dove Shack's (with Warren G) "Summertime in the LBC," and dating back to 1966 with The Lovin Spoonful's summertime classic "Summer In The City."

Main Source feat Nas, Joe Fatal, & Akinyele "Live from the BBQ" (1991)

Foo Fighters "Barbeque Song" (2007)

Every year Record Store Day just gets bigger and bigger, and the craziness grows! Here in SF before we opened the line was INSANE outside our doors and the first person in line had been there since 6am! That's some dedication! Even more astounding, customers were calling Friday night and asking if they could camp out for prime spots on the big day!

At 10:30am on the button, the doors were opened and people swarmed into the treasure-laden vinyl aisles of Amoeba SF. There were hoardes of people packing the rows and surrounding the 7"s. Watch an awesome video below shot by Audra of the line and the vibe before the doors were flung open!

The Foo Fighters Hate Glee

Posted by Billyjam, March 18, 2011 10:24am | Post a Comment

Unlike the much clicked on & commented upon Charles Reece penned post Diamanda Galás Hates The Foo Fighters, this Amoeblog has nothing to do with Diamanda Galás but it does have something to do with her nemesis Dave Grohl. As reported last evening by the Hollywood Reporter, the Foo Fighters' frontman and his bandmates share the view held by such other rockers as the Kings of Leon and Slash in that he does not want his band's music used on the popular TV show Glee, and is willing to get into a licensing battle if needed to ensure that the Foos' music never ends up as a Glee musical number.

"It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do fucking Glee,” Grohl told the Hollywood Reporter in Austin at SXSW this week following the premiere screening of the band's new documentary Foo Fighters: Back and Forth. “And then the guy who created Glee [Ryan Murphy] is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his fucking show… Fuck that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee," Grohl told the Reporter, echoing a similar sentiment by Guns N Roses' former guitarist Slash from two months ago.
