Recap: January Charity Auction to Benefit Five Acres

Posted by Amoebite, January 6, 2014 05:00pm | Post a Comment

Drew Droege at Amoeba HollywoodOur first charity auction of 2014 was a hoot! On Saturday, January 4 we had the sweet and wonderful (and slyly hilarious!) Drew Droege host our monthly charity auction. On the heels of our holiday toy drive which brought in great gifts for the children at 5 Acres, this month we wanted to raise even more funds for this organization by auctioning off an array of items. We had a blast with actor/comedian Drew Droege, who was gracious enough to come back to Amoeba for an encore auctioneering appearance!

Our guest auctioneer, Drew Droege, is an alum of The Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade. He is known on the Internet for his portrayals of Chloe Sevigny, Tanya Roberts, Feathers in "Planet Unicorn," and Professor LaFrange on Starz' new web series Hollywood Acting Studio. He's appeared on numerous television shows including Chozen, Drunk History, Sean Saves The World, Chelsea Lately, NTSF: SD: SUV, Burning Love, Happy Endings, Key And Peele, House Of Lies, New Girl, How I Met Your Mother, and Up All Night

five acresIf you're not familiar with Southern California's Five Acres, they promote safety, well-being and permanency for at-risk children and their families by building on their strengths and empowering them within communities. Five Acres has served vulnerable children and families since 1888 by providing family-centered support services on their campus in Altadena and through outreach programs in homes, at schools and in off-site offices.

Participate in Amoeba's Charity Efforts this Holiday Season

We’ve had a great year for donations through our monthly charity auctions (the last one of the year is Dec. 7). But we’re not done yet.

san francisco food bankAt Amoeba San Francisco, we’re joining forces with the San Francisco Food Bank to collect canned goods and nonperishable items for singles and families in need through Dec. 23. Additionally, you can make a monetary donation to the San Francisco Food Bank online. For each $1 donated, the SF Food Bank is able to distribute $6 worth of food. The need is especially great now, as 1 in 4 residents of San Francisco and Marin County are in need of food assistance, and the need in both areas has grown by nearly 20% since 2008, according to SF Food Bank.

As a thank you for your donations, you will receive a coupon for $5 off a purchase of $25 or more at Amoeba SF.

Recap: December Charity Auction with Garfunkel and Oates

Posted by Amoebite, December 4, 2012 05:06pm | Post a Comment

Garfunkel and Oates at AmoebaMusical comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates hosted the December charity auction at Amoeba Hollywood. This was actually their second time hosting the auction and, once again, their zany and "in-yer-face-perfectly-appropriate-for-a-Saturday-afternoon-at-the-record-store" humor proved that they ain't just pretty faces. The girls drew a really great crowd of about 70 to see them perform a couple of songs and then launch into the rapid-fire auctioning frenzy.

Ya had to be QUICK to get a bid in 'cause they weren't kidding around about this auction. They were HIGHLY entertaining and definitely hilarious -- and they had more than a fair share of people wondering, "wait did they just say....??? "

Here are some of the highlights from the auction:

  • Beatles lunchbox with Trader Joe's Gift Card - $80.00
  • Tiny Furniture Blu-ray signed by Lena Dunham - $30.00
  • John Waters Holiday Show tickets + Hairspray DVD - $40.00
  • Public Enemy and Sufjan Stevens concert tickets - $97.00 (Awesome!!)
  • Urban Outfitters Gift Card - $ 65.00
  • Led Zeppelin package - $20.00
  • Beatles collectibles (in a Rolling Stones bag) - $25.00
  • Limited edition Record Store Day bag - $70.00
  • Special Amoeba in-store VIP pass - $80.00
  • Polyphonic Spree tickets with Hit Record book signed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt - $50.00
  • Amoeba special gift bag with random crazy stuff - $40.00
  • Yo Gabba Gabba package - $20.00
  • John Cale and Ty Segall concert tickets - $25.00

Cool stuff and some great bids! All together Garfunkel and Oates (and you guys!) helped raise $652.00 in bids, and together with the Amoeba match it comes to $1,304.00 to the wonderful organization Five Acres, which helps families and kids in need over the holidays. All in all it was a ROCKIN' good time. Thanks so much to Garfunkel and Oates for coming back to our charity auction and making this one of the most memorable Saturday auctions ever!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING & AMOEBA HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE REMINDER

Posted by Billyjam, November 26, 2009 08:00am | Post a Comment

Happy Thanksgiving, Amoeblog readers! Above is Gloria Gobbler's reinterpretation of "You Can't Hurry Love" from a turkey's perspective, with reworked lines such as, "You can't gobble me on Thanksgiving Day. Why not eat tofu? Feed yourself the vegan way." And if you enjoy Thanksgiving themed, turkey perspective song parodies done to animation, check out the reworking of MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" -- "U Can't Stuff This" or The Giblets' reinterpretation of Queen's "We Will Rock You" -- "We Will Eat You."

And don't forget that tomorrow, Friday, November 27th, is when Amoeba kicks off its annual Holiday Toy Drive at all three Amoeba Music stores. When you come in to Amoeba over the next few weeks (cut off dates vary from store to store) we strongly encourage you to spread the love to those not as well off this year by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy for some needy child in your community.

And to help you feel even better about donating a toy for some poor kid, as a thank you for your generosity, Amoeba will give you a $2 coupon valid for any item over $3.99! All toys collected will be distributed to a local charity: Amoeba Hollywood will donate to Five Acres, Amoeba San Francisco will collect toys for Compass Community Services, and Amoeba Berkeley will provide toys to A Safe Place. For full details on the Amoeba toy drive run dates and the charities involved, click here.
