RSVP here to see Holy Fuck with James Supercave and Wunder Wunder May 22 at The Roxy for Red Bull’s next Sound Select show in Los Angeles. The show is only $3 with an RSVP.

Canadian electro-pop band Holy Fuck began as almost an experiment in sound—how can you make electronic music without actually using electronic instruments? Rather than laptops and sequencers, the band chose to use film equipment, toys and other non-instruments to achieve similar effects.

Fast forward 10 years, and they’re sharing stages with the likes of Skrillex at EDM festivals without losing an ounce of their outsider cool. The band’s next show sees them headlining the next Red Bull Sound Select show in Los Angeles May 22 at The Roxy with Aussie/L.A. psych-pop band Wunder Wunder (read an interview here) and L.A. indie pop band James Supercave. We caught up with the band (made up of Brian Borcherdt, Graham Walsh, Matt McQuaid and Matt Schulz) a week before the show.

wunder wunderIf there’s ever been a group that fused the sensibilities of two places they've come from, it’s Wunder Wunder, an Australian band that now live in L.A. The band hails from a place known for its awesome psych-pop bands, like Tame Impala and Jagwar Ma, to name a few, but they’ve got a distinctly easygoing, SoCal vibe, too, on songs like the glittering “Coatstline.”

Even though we’ve only heard two songs so far from the band, we’re already pumped about the prospects they offer. The duo’s debut album, Everything Infinite, is out July 15. We caught up with the band, made up of Aaron Shanahan and Benjamin Plant (who are also in electro-pop band Miami Horror) before their May 22 show with Holy Fuck and James Supercave at The Roxy May 22.

Holy Fuck

Toronto-based Holy Fuck have released three albums of genre-pushing electronica, using unorthodox “instruments” such as film synchronizers and toy instruments in addition to electronic elements in order to create danceable beats and mesmerizing sounds. Their latest album is called Latin, and they’re working on a new one right now.

Supporting Holy Fuck at this show will be a couple of Los Angeles acts. James Supercave writes upbeat electro-pop with heartfelt vocals, as can be heard on his latest release, The Afternoon EP, which was just release last month. Wunder Wunder, an Australian, L.A.-based duo of producers who make shimmering, modern electronic pop with psychedelic touches, will open the show, followed by James Supercave and Holy Fuck.

Show Recap: Heloise & the Savoir Faire at Amoeba Hollywood

eloise savoir faire amoeba hollywoodElijah Wood aka DJ Jamie Starr began the July 10 set at Amoeba Hollywood playing obscure disco and funk beats from the likes of Benis Letin, Kiki Gyan and Betty Padgett (thank god for Shazam), throwing in a little bit of The Jets and ESG to round it out. Heloise came out dressed in head-to-toe leopard print wrapped in a pink sequined fabric, sounding great despite singing along to just a backing track on “Perelandra,” from her excellent alt-pop album Diamond Dust. “Are you wearing comfortable shoes?” she asked before performing to jagged disco song “Dancefloor Destroyer.” “elijah wood amoeba hollywoodLet the music move you” she sang on the Kylie-ish "Dive In," shimmying around like the alternative diva she is, cooing in exotic ways and then played along on an iPhone-based electric organ — no one rocks an app-based instrument like Heloise! On the last song, “Vibezz,” she whipped around her microphone wire to the song’s slow synth chords and pumped her fist when the beat picked up, belting over the backing track and owning the stage with her one-woman show.
