"I think it's extremely important to make lots of jokes in bleak times," says singer, producer, and DJ Cassy as she picks up a comedy record, What Becomes A Semi-Legend Most?, by Joan Rivers. Cassy loved her audacity, saying she had "the balls to say things that other people would never dare to say." Though she starts by referencing these bleak times, Cassy picked up some fun records when she recently visited Amoeba Hollywood, which ran the gamut from classical to techno to music "for when you're, like, a 50 year-old man. Which I'm not."

Cassy Donna Amoeba MusicBorn in England and raised in Austria, Cassy's career began in the '90s as a DJ at Viennese club Flex. Around the same time, she appeared as a vocalist on Elin's remix of Ganymed's "Music Takes Me Higher" and Zombie Nation's "Unload." After collaborations with DJ Dave the Hustler, Luciano, and Mathew Jonson, Cassy became further immersed in the minimal techno scene and relocated to Berlin.

In 2004, Cassy became a resident at the legendary Panorama Bar, where she would hold down the decks once-a-month for three years. During this time she released tracks for labels such as Ostgut Ton, Perlon, and Beat Street, as well as her own Cassy imprint. After Berlin, Cassy did stints at clubs in Paris, Ibiza, and Amsterdam. She worked with King Britt on her debut full-length, Donna, which was just released via K7 last week. Cassy is currently on tour throughout Europe.

Duran Duran What's In My Bag? Amoeba Music

"I realize what a pleasure it is going through racks, and actually finding things. That reminds me of my childhood, but also of times, not quite so far away, when you had that choice," says Nick Rhodes, keyboardist and founding member of Duran Duran, about shopping for DVDs at Amoeba Hollywood. Amoeba hosted a signing with the legendary band for the release of their latest album, Paper Gods, and we got a chance to meet up with the band after they went hunting for music and movies.

Duran Duran are one of the quintessential bands to emerge from England's new wave/synth pop scene in the 1980s. Formed in 1978 by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor, over time the lineup solidified to include drummer Roger Taylor, frontman Simon Le Bon, and guitarist Andy Taylor. Initially inspired by post-punk and art school ideas and aligned early on with the New Romantic scene, Duran Duran quickly became superstars on the strength of their innovative music videos, fashion-forward image, and impressive number of chart-topping singles.

Duran Duran Paper Gods Amoeba MusicThe band's career took off with the release of their 1981 self-titled debut, which reached number 3 on the UK charts. Success in the US came shortly thereafter, when Duran Duran's sophomore LP, Rioclocked in at number 6 on the Billboard 200. The band's string of successes continued with 1983's Seven and the Ragged Tiger and 1986's Notorious, with the band touring the globe and being feted as teen heartthrobs. By 1993, Duran Duran was back at the top of the charts, thanks to the release of a second self-titled album, dubbed The Wedding Album to differentiate it from the band's debut. Duran Duran continue to release new albums and will be touring the US this summer, including a stop in San Francisco for Outside Lands.

New "What's in My Bag?" Episode with The Everymen

The Everymen

The Everymen are a New Jersey-based band who make straightforward punk rock jams in the vein of Jay Reatard and Rocket from the Crypt. Founded in 2009, the band has released two studio albums: 2012's New Jersey Hardcore and 2014's Givin' Up on Free Jazz. After a series of shows at SXSW, the band went back to the studio in spring 2015 to record with Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes for a planned 2016 release. In summer 2015, The War on Drugs invited the The Everymen to open for them on their North American tour dates.

While on tour, Mike V and Catherine Herrick from The Everymen stopped by Amoeba Hollywood and shared their finds with our What's In My Bag? crew. Mike V picked up Hate Your Friends by The Lemonheads, citing it as the record that inspired him to write songs and start a band when he was a teenager. Catherine chose Duran Duran's self-titled album, revealing that she "went through a huge, obsessive Duran Duran period" when she was in high school and that one time she accidentally followed John Taylor down the street. Check out the rest of Mike V and Catherine's picks in the full episode below:

Beach House’s latest album strips back some of the pop shimmer of their last two albums while retaining the more confident songcraft they started debuting on 2010’s Teen Dream. First single “Sparks” is a powerhouse shoegazer that showcases the duo’s strengths, pairing Alex Scally’s emotive guitarwork with Victoria LeGrand’s lush, layered vocals.
