Dressed all in black (as was her backing band) with a black Fender Telecaster in hand, Wales native Cate Le Bon took to the stage at Amoeba Hollywood on April 30, 2014 in support of her latest release, Mug Museum (Wichita Recordings). Le Bon performed a set of beautiful melancholy songs pulled from the new album. Fans packed the aisles at Amoeba and were treated to a signing after the show.
The new album finds Le Bon crafting gems in the wake of her paternal grandmother's death. By no means is Mug Museum a dark, sad production about mourning, although what's a Cate le Bon album without themes of death and mortality? The album is a well-rounded work of art, at times channelling '60s psych, with organ droned sonics making it both dirty and pretty all at the same time. Le Bon's vocals are front and center like never before and some critics may argue Mug Museum is the best release in her catalog.
