Li'l Bit #5

In my perusal of this morning's news, I happened upon this in the Guardian UK:

Somewhere out there, either in the skies of California or many miles beyond - floating down the Thames, wafting across the Mississippi, bobbing over the Sargasso sea, - there is a gigantic inflatable pig that belongs to the Pink Floyd frontman. And he wants it back.

Waters' giant pig balloon was last seen on Sunday, during his closing performance at the Coachella festival. As Waters played Pigs (Three Different Ones), the two-storey-tall dirigible was released over the crowd.

Contrary to what you'd think, this is not the first time that a giant pig zeppelin has gotten away from Waters. During photo sessions for Pink Floyd's 1977 album, Animals, a helium-filled pig made a break for it from above Battersea power station. Flights were cancelled as the pig passed near Heathrow Airport, on its way to the dark side of the moon.

But this time, Roger Waters wants the pig back. Coachella organisers are offering a reward of $10,000 and four lifetime tickets should anyone find the blow-up porker. How to get in touch with them? Email lostpig@coachella.com, naturally.

Flying high in the friendly skies - The pig at Coachella

As some of you know, I don't like pigs. I don't like to eat them, I don't like to touch them, and I certainly don't like the idea that some Bunyanesque replication of one is lurking in my sweet United States of America.

I am personally offering a sum of $12 to anyone who can prove that the pig has been destroyed. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep until then...

AMOEBLOGGER MIKE BEE IN SF WEEKLY + OTHER NEWS ITEMS

Props to San Francisco Amoeba Music electronic music buyer and sometime Amoeblogger MikeBee (left),  aka Mike Battaglia, who pens the Technophilia blog.  He got a really nice one page write up in this week's SF Weekly in their special Listen Up issue dedicated to "local aficionados who help San Francisco navigate a brave new world."

Under the heading "Making a Buzz: DJ MikeBee keeps electronic connoisseurs on their toes," the article, penned by Toph One, gives much love to MikeBee, calling him "a true vanguard in the SF music community" and labeling him a "Renaissance man" for his long list of accomplishments that include being a club & radio (KUSF) DJ, journalist, and label co-owner. To read the article in full either pick up the current SF Weekly and flip open to Page 15 of the Listen Up supplement or read it online at sfweekly.com.

Monday, March 17th (aka Saint Patrick's Day) looks like it is going to be a good day at Amoeba Music for free music when Neon Neon (the group formed by Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals) play a free instore at the Hollywood Amoeba Music (6PM showtime), while up north Peru Negro have an instore performance at the San Francisco Amoeba Music at 7PM.  Speaking of free things from Amoeba Music: coming soon will the new issue of Music We Like, the booklet and online list of the music that folks who work at Amoeba are feeling (Top Five lists etc.). Meantime, check out the last Music We Like  online.

(In which Job gets high and complains of his illness.)

I don’t want you to think I’m an overly critical person, but frankly, I can’t think of very many nice things to say about ear infections.

It’s my first time having one, so I’m probably not the best person to speak with authority on the subject. Because it’s all so new, I hate to draw too many conclusions. I generally think of myself as open to new experiences.

When it comes to food, for example, I am practically compelled to taste a dish, if I never have before. Whether it’s sea urchin at a sushi bar in Sacramento or sweetbreads at Musso & Frank Grill or chilled monkey brains with my underage sidekick… oh wait… That was “Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom” - I always get that and my life confused. (It’s easy when you work on the mezzanine at Amoeba Music Hollywood – but we’ll get to that later.)

The point is… um…

Okay, you need to know right away that I am hopped-up on loads of Vicodin. It’s one of the many things my doctor prescribed for the aforementioned ailment.

If you’re like most people found at a swell music store such as the one I work at, you probably just got all warm and fuzzy at the mention of Vicodin. You maybe even got a little jealous of me.

“Oh, lucky,” you think. But I hate it. For one thing, it makes writing a blog almost impossible.

“But Job,” you protest, “You seem to be doing a fine job. Your prose is witty and accessible; smart and grammatically deft. Why, you’ve even managed to find a clever way to sneak in usage of the words ‘ecchymosis’ and ‘zizith’ in the same sentence!”

Well, I return, you’re very kind. But what you don’t know is that I’ve been working on this entry for eight hours without a break (unless you count the lost-time from my fainting spell immediately after I typed out the word grammatically).
