Hip-Hop Rap-Up, Week End 01.05.13: E-Lit's Picks N Predictions, BPos, First Light (Opio + Pep Love), Sean Born, Skillz

Posted by Billyjam, January 5, 2013 04:20am | Post a Comment
The music business may close down for the holidays with hardly any new releases in early January but there are still new videos coming out like the three below.  Also below E-Lit at the Amoeba Berkeley store shares his top ten picks of the past year as well as his predictions for 2013 in hip-hop. Skillz just dropped "2012 Rap Up" but announced publicly and in the song that it will be his very last annual "rap up" after ten years and doing his anticipated year in review songs - and seen others enter the year-rap up field like popular YouTube rapper DeStorm

The videos below include the new Kev Brown produced track from Sean Born "Grandeur," and the brand new (two day old) video for the newest Hiero joint: Opio + Pep Love's (aka First Light) song "Lighters" from the duo's forthcoming debut album Fallacy Fantasy which will arrive in Amoeba March 12th. Immediately below is  the new video from SF hip-hop crew BPos for their song "Balance" (from the group's last release Pos Tapes Volume Three). The video was filmed by Inkfat and BPos during BPos' 2012 Super Hero Pool Party Tour, and the song's beat is by Aspect McCarthy (ghosNOTES) while the video itself was made by BPos member Goodword.

The Beastie Boys, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Whodini, and Jam Master Jay solo set all on the one bill? Wow! What a line-up that was for that historic hip-hop show at Philly's Spectrum Stadium back in July of 1986. This cool collectible item (a reproduction poster 14" by 22" that is printed on heavy cardboard) is just one of the many posters for sale from Amoeba - both in store and online from the Amoeba.com shop. Click here to find out more about purchasing it and click here for listings of more posters to buy from Amoeba's online store. The numerous posters on sale at Amoeba include rare, vintage, and current posters and include many genres of music including lots of rock and soul.

Rap/hip-hop artist posters at the online store include a cool 2Pac 1971 - 1996 poster, a 2Pac and Snoop poster, a Drake poster, an NWA The World's Most Dangerous Group poster, and both a Notorious B.I.G. commemorative poster and a BIggie Ready To Die poster. Please note that the amount of hip-hop posters online at Amoeba.com is relatively few in comparison to the range available in the three Amoeba stores.

BPos Celebrate "Pos Tapes the Album" with Party at The Showdown in San Francisco

Posted by Billyjam, June 28, 2012 12:45pm | Post a Comment
BPos may not (yet) be a household name but the hardworking Bay Area, hip-hop crew, whose name stands for Be Positive sure deserve to be. And this just might happen with the release of their tight new album Pos Tapes the Album released this week on their own One League Entertainment label. Comprised of DJ Johnny Venetti and emcees/lyricists Goodword, Khafre, & D-Wiz (who also produces) this San Francisco diehard hip-hop quartet's new joint is their strongest release to date: a 17-track collection culled from Pos Tapes Vol. 1-3, a trilogy of self-produced “mix tape” digital albums released by the group over the past two years and featuring guest spots from Z-Man, Pep Love, Equipto, and others.

In celebration of their latest release, which is available at Amoeba Music, BPos are throwing a record release party tomorrow Friday (June 29th) at The Showdown on Sixth Street in San Francisco. In addition to performances throughout the night from BPos the record release party will also include DJ sets from Inkfat, Aspect McArthy, and Johnny Venetti - who as well as being the group's DJ is also the owner of the downtown San Francisco venue. This past week I caught up with the DJ and the other members of BPos to ask them about their hip-hop musical journey to date, the new album, and their personal fave Bay Area hip-hop artists. That conversation follows below the brand new video for the album BPos track "Live Ya Life"

Amoeblog: Can you give a brief overview of the legacy/history of BPos for those who may not know - including exactly when you first formed and the total number of recordings / releases to date?

El-P "Stay Down (feat Nick Diamonds)" live on Letterman last week (May 2012)

Amoeba Hollywood Hip-Hop Top 5 : Week Ending May 5th, 2012

1) El-P Cancer4Cure (Fat Possum)

2) Psycho Realm Presents Sick Jacken & Cyni In Terror Tapes 2 (MB Recordings)

3) Killer MIke R.A.P. Music (William Street)

4) House Shoes Time EP (Tres Records)

5) Odd Future The Of Tape Vol. 2  (Odd Future)

Lots of great new releases on the brand new Amoeba Hip-Hop Top Five chart from the Hollywood Amoeba store this week including in the number one slot El-P's welcome return, after 5 years with no new releases, with his all killer, twelve track album Cancer4Cure (aka C4C which is avail in both CD and LP formats) via the Fat Possum record company (he folded his Def Jux record label a while back). The Amoeba website store calls this latest El-P release "his strongest work since his debut, Fantastic Damage" and praising the supertalented East Coast producer/emcee for sounding "as energized as he did on that decade-old debut, matching Killer Mike (whose own excellent R.A.P. Music also recently came out and was produced by El-P) rhyme for rhyme on standout “Tougher Colder Killer,” also featuring fellow Def Jux alumnus Despot."

BPos "Dope" (2011)

Above is the Strive Films produced video for the new track "Dope" by underrated Bay Area hip-hop crew BPos which is dedicated to the late great Dub Star (aka Rick Flare/Kwanz/K-Dub) of Bored Stiff fame (fellow Bored Stiff member Equipto is among the many folks making cameos in the above video). "Dope" is the first of a series of music videos off of the San Francisco group's' brand new album Pos Tapes Vol. II. It is available as a free download but the crew's Vincente Goodword tell the Amoeblog that. "We will have some 45's in Amoeba for it in a couple months." And on Sunday, July 17th, BPos will be performing at Clux Six (60 6th st (@ Mission St.) at Hip-Hop, Hope & Harmony - the official SF AIDS Walk after-party! The $10 door ticket gets you both entrance to the event a copy of the benefit CD with proceeds going to SF AIDS Walk Foundation. General club info & ticket info for event and for general info on BPos including how to download latest free mix album.

Serengeti's anticipated new album, Family & Friends on Anticon, had its release date pushed back to August 9th when both CD and vinyl versions of this excellent album will arrive in Amoeba. Look for an Amoeblog interview with the unique Chicago area emcee on that same date. Also coming next month is a hot new collaborative project called Flash Bang Grenada which is the combined forces of LA alternative MC Busdriver and Low End Theory MC Nocando. Their 10 track album 10 Haters will drop August 23rd and should be a popular item with fans of underground hip-hop. As well as production from such Low End regulars like Nosaj Thing, Free The Robots, and Shlohmo there will be guest mic spots from Del the Funky Homosapien and Open Mike Eagle.
