It's not often that E-40's name is linked to that of Bernie Sanders. Maybe with fellow Bay rapper Berner, wtih whom he's recorded, but not Bernie the Senator from Vermont  who is running for Democratic nomination for President of the United States.  And in the case of Bernie, his name might be linked with another hip-hopper, Run The Jewels' Killer Mike who is a big supporter, but not E-40 the Vallejo rapper/savvy businessman.

But in local Bay Area news reports this morning both the Vallejo rapper and the Democratic presidential primary candidate's names got equal top billing in stories on the Golden State Warriors victorious win last night. Each basketball fans, both the rapper and the politician were in attendance at Oakland's Oracle Arena for last night's exciting game where, following their 96-88 win, the Warriors won the NBA Conference Finals against Oklahoma City Thunder 4-3. As well as reporting on the Warriors improbable win following the home team been down 3-1, local Bay Area news outlets reported on both E-40 and Bernie Sanders been among those in attendance at the crucial game.

Sanders, who is busy campaigning in California this week with a stop in Emeryville today, had two big events in Oakland yesterday including a packed rally outside Oakland City Hall, where the Secret Service jumped in to defend him when protesters hopped the barriers and bum rushed the podium. But even after his stressful busy day Sanders still had energy left to attend the Warriors game. Meanwhile E-40 is a longtime diehard basketball fan, especially the Warriors.

"Like a day spent inside someone else’s head," is how Drake's new album VIEWS  (Republic) is summed up in the Amoeba Review of the anticipated album that arrived in Amoeba yesterday. The Canadian star's first official album release since 2013's Nothing Was The Same and first full release since last year's "commercial mixtape" full-length If You're Reading This It's Too Late, VIEWS is already a bonafide commercial hit. The new album may have only dropped yesterday (as physical release but a week earlier as digital via certain outlet) but by midday Friday first week sales figures were released noting how the album was even outselling Beyonce's hugely hyped Lemonade that also arrived in Amoeba yesterday.

may not be an officially recognized national holiday (yet) but that matters little to the legions of pot enthusiasts, especially in the Bay Area, who will gather at various venues and events throughout today to celebrate the annual hemp holiday. Think of 4/20 as the Record Store Day for cannabis connoisseurs. It's a day when new strains are unveiled, when clubs do giveaways and specials, and musical acts including lots of hip-hoppers perform to celebrate the beloved date. Assigned to the 20th day of the fourth month, which is derived from the daily 4:20pm designated dank time, 4/20 is a relatively recent phenomenon.  While it has only been around for a couple of decades, 4/20 day celebrations have exponentially grown in popularity over time, especially in the past few years.

Fueling this noticeable national increase in public celebrating of cannabis consumption, are the steps been taken by many states across the US toward legalizing or non-criminalizing cannabis for either medical or recreational use. While Colorado may have legalized weed and California just okayed it for medical use, from travels throughout both states, my experience is that California is much more open and free minded about cannabis consumption (not to mention way more affordable!). Consequently some of the best 4/20 celebrations are taking place in the Golden State today, especially in the Bay Area where Cypress Hill are among the many artists performing. Below is a rough guide to 4/20 events in the Bay.

Berner "Come On" from his 2014 Bern One Ent album Drugstore Cowboy

That old adage "do what you love" is perfectly applicable to the weed loving, nationally acclaimed prolific Bay Area rapper Berner. For the past decade plus this rap artist, weed activist/entrepreneur born Gilbert Anthony Mano has crafted a unique and phenomenally lucrative and fun career, all the while balancing his two main life passions of weed and rap music. Having built a strong rep as rap recording and performing artist, to date Berner's rich back catalog boasts 14 albums including his most recent full-length release found at Amoeba,  Drought Season 3, which is just one of many dropped on his own prolific Bern One Ent. record label. Equally respected by rap fans and peers, Berner's countless studio collaborations over the years include full length releases with such fellow Bay Area artists as Messy Marv, Equipto and the late great rapper The Jacka with whom he recorded the three part aforementioned Drought Season trilogy. Others in the really long list of Berner collabs include B-Real, Snoop Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, Young Thug, and Too $hort. Perhaps even more widely known in hip-hop is his longstanding relationship and collaborative work with Wiz Khalifa. Having been down since day one with the Pittsburgh, PA based, fellow weed loving hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa, the Bay Area artist counts himself as among those part of Khalifa's elite Taylor Gang Ent. label crew along with such others as Project Pat, Chevy Woods, Ty Dolla $ign, and Tuki Carter.

New releases to Amoeba this past week include the EP 20 Lights (Bern One Entertainment) by the numero uno Bay Area weed ambassador Berner whose prolific output disproves that old belief that weed makes you lazy (his last release - the album Drugstore Cowboy - dropped just three short months ago).  Included on this new joint (pun intended) guest heavy, seven song CD are collaborations with such fellow dank-loving talents as Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Smiggz, The Jacka, and Mac Dre (the latter two Bay Area greats no longer with us - rest in peace).  Also new this week is the vinyl version of Sour Soul by BadBadNotGood backing Ghostface Killah that was released on CD a month ago. This explicit new vinyl version, that is care of Lex Records, comes complete with a digital download card.  is available in regular  the two download-only smoked and chopped 8Ball & MJG albums Comin Out Hard and On The Outside Looking In remix projects by Green Thumb that feature Dirty South rap tracks each given that hella slowed down and extended remix treatment.
