Behind the Scenes with Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics

Dave Stewart shot an episode of What's In My Bag? at Amoeba Hollywood recently. Atlhough he may best be known as half of the Eurythmics, he is an incredibly accomplished producer and songwriter, not to mention being an author and filmmaker on top of all that. The man has worked with legends, from Nelson Mandela (on the 46664 campaign) to Mick Jagger, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks and a ton of others. Oh, did I forget to mention that Mr. Stewart also started a band called Super Heavy with Mick Jagger, A.R. Rahman, Damian Marley, and Joss Stone?

Needless to say, he had a lot of great stories to share with us, including how Mick Jagger can't help but behave like "Mick Jagger on stage," complete with all his signature dance moves, even when he's in the recording booth. Can't wait to see the video when it's finished!

Behind the Scenes: Dave Gahan, Rich Machin and Serj Tankian

Amoeba Hollywood was buzzing with some recent "What's In My Bag?" guests.

Serj Tankian HarakiriFirst, we had Serj Tankian, solo artist and frontman for System of a Down. He was particuarly interested in film music, including composers Ennio Morricone and John Williams. His choices were mostly from the jazz room, although he did select a Sigur Ros album and Mondo Cane by his friend Mike Patton. Serj actually came in that day inquiring about the experimental section which is now located in the jazz room, so technically Mondo Cane is also a jazz room pick. As for the rest of his picks and what he said about each one, you'll have to wait for the video!

Serj just announced a North American tour in support of his new solo album, Harakiri. You can see him live in Los Angeles September 28 at Club Nokia.

Swedish garage rock quintet The Hives visited Amoeba Hollywood today for a What's In My Bag? video on their way to the desert for Coachella weekend #2. This is the band's second time playing Coachella (their first was in 2003) and, after last weekend's performance at the festival, they were excited to be heading back for another show. Their new album, Lex Hives - their first album in five years - is out June 5 on band's Disques Hive label.

At the end of the shoot, the band was joined by honorary Hives member and unofficial Amoeba mascot CASH the dog

Behind the Scenes of our "What's In My Bag?" Shoot with Herbie Hancock

We had the pleasure of interviewing the legendary Herbie Hancock at Amoeba Hollywood for a What's In My Bag? episode and to talk about his role as the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for International Jazz Day (April 30). During the shoot, Mr. Hancock told us about his Sony 4K 3D projector and his obsession with watching 3D Blu-ray movies.

Born in Chicago in 1940, Mr. Hancock was a child piano prodigy who performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11. He began playing jazz in high school, and cultivated a passion for electronics and science, double-majoring in music and electrical engineering in college. Over the course of his five decade career, his music has influenced musicians across genres, including jazz, soul, and electronic. As the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Mr. Hancock will kick off the festivities in Paris on April 27, then flying to New Orleans and New York for events in both cities on April 30.

We're screening a documentary about Mr. Hancock called Herbie Hancock: Possibilities for FREE on Monday, April 30 at Space 15Twenty (across from Amoeba Hollywood). More info.

Behind the Scenes of our "What's In My Bag?" Video with Grimes

Canadian songstress and bedroom beatmaker Grimes (a.k.a. Claire Boucher) stopped by Amoeba Hollywood for a What's In My Bag? shoot. I've been obsessed with her single "Genesis" and her recent album, Visions (4AD). She was in town for a sold out show at the Echo Friday night (coming to LA off of a sold out show in SF earlier in the week).

Here are a few pics to tide us over until the video is ready:
