Swedish garage rock quintet The Hives visited Amoeba Hollywood today for a What's In My Bag? video on their way to the desert for Coachella weekend #2. This is the band's second time playing Coachella (their first was in 2003) and, after last weekend's performance at the festival, they were excited to be heading back for another show. Their new album, Lex Hives - their first album in five years - is out June 5 on band's Disques Hive label.
At the end of the shoot, the band was joined by honorary Hives member and unofficial Amoeba mascot CASH the dog!
Henry Rollins was our guest DJ at last year's Record Store Day and gave this impassioned speech about the significance of Record Store Day and supporting independent record stores. Testify, Henry, testify!
We had another great auction on Saturday, April 7 at Amoeba Hollywood hosted by the hilarious Bob Odenkirk. It was great to have him back again and he was funnier than ever in his return engagement as guest host auctioneer.
Many folks came out to support and to see Bob Odenkirk in action making something hard look really easy. A lot of folks bid on several items and it was one of the most supported auctions we have had...
With his first item up for bid (a Lana Del Rey signed 7" single) he had all of the fans and onlookers in stitches. He was on fire and drove up the bids for 826LA, an amazing organization founded by Dave Eggers and the McSweeney's crew.
Here are a few of the highlights:
Mr. Show DVD set - $30.00
Jimi Hendrix coasters - $10.00
Elvis Pack - $23.00 ("truth is the rumors about elvis still being alive are completely false---truth is he was NEVER alive and it has only been a string of impersonators all these years...." :)
Limited edition Record Store Day 45s and Bag - $30.00
This week David Lynch released his self-directed music video for "Crazy Clown Time," the title track from his first solo album. Lynch describes the setting for the video as “an intense psychotic backyard craziness, fueled by beer" which is a pretty perfect summation. With the mood set, Lynch's sing-speak twang provides the narration for the events unfolding in the video.
Crazy Clown Time, released in November 2011 on Play It Again Sam, was recorded over a period of several months at Lynch's personal studio near Mulholland Drive with engineer and collaborator Dean Hurley. As you might expect from the director of Erasherhead, Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, his music - much like his video for "Crazy Clown Time" - is echoey, weird, repetitive, foreboding, hypnotic, and fascinating.

Recently we held our first-ever design contest for our 2012 Record Store Day T-shirt. We were blown away by the creativity and effort everyone put into the contest...not to mention the sheer volume of entries! We received over 200 designs! It was a really tough decision but after much deliberation we are proud to reveal the two winning designs by Adam Thiesen and Erika Themaras!
