New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With Cattle Decapitation

Cattle Decapitation

San Diego deathgrind band Cattle Decapitation is known for their songs Cattle Decapprotesting the mistreatment of animals and enviornmental abuse. Since forming in 1996, they have released seven studio albums and just teased a follow up to 2014's Monolith Of Inhumanity, which is slated for release later this year (more details to be announced May 20th).

Vocalist Travis Ryan and bassist Derek Engemann visited Amoeba Hollywood recently to do some record shopping. The two picked up an eclectic mix of music, including a few albums fans might not expect. Travis kicks things off with A Tribute To Bethlehem, the German metal band. Derek shows off a Dark Funeral tatoo to go with his new copy of The Secrets Of The Black Arts (Century Media) and we learn a little secret about why he loves this record so much. Travis finds two psychedelic gems from Turkish folk-rocker Selda Bagcan and gets his hands on a copy of Beck's Morning Phase (Capitol) pressed on 180 gram vinyl. In true record shopping fashion, Derek spots an album by Pagan-metal band Bornholm and picks the album solely based on its cover art. From psychedelic folk to experimental noise to pop vocal and metal, Travis and Derek dig for it all. Watch the full episode below to see all their finds:

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With Mike Scott of The Waterboys

Posted by Amoebite, April 21, 2015 06:17pm | Post a Comment

Mike Scott

The Waterboys is the brainchild of Scottish-born singer-songwriter Mike Scott. The project blew up in the '80s with its Celtic-inspired rock and roll, including the hit song "The Whole of the Moon" from their 1985 album This Is the Sea. Ten years into the band's career, Mike Scott, the driving force behind The Waterboys,  went "solo" and the band were on hiatus for most of the '90s. The Waterboys came back in 2000 and have been releasing albums and touring the world since. 2015 has been very busy for The Waterboys, including two new releases, tour dates and their North American national television debut on the Late Show With David Letterman. The band's new album, Modern Blues  (Harlequin & Clown) hit shelves April 7th and was closely followed by Puck's Blues, (Harlequin & Clown) a special 10" vinyl for Record Store Day.

Be sure to catch The Waterboys when they're in Los Angeles next month to play the Fonda Theatre May 13th. You can purchase tickets in-store at Amoeba Hollywood with super low fees or you can get them online here.

Amoeba Hollywood record store day

Amoeba Hollywood’s Record Store Day festivities continued on into this afternoon with awesome DJ sets, delicious food and RSD-themed activities. Read about the morning and watch our interview with the early bird collectors in line here. At noon, our friends from Family Industries started silk-screening special RSD 2015 designs onto tote bags and t-shirts, with the proceeds benefiting the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Starting at 1pm, some of our favorite Los Angeles-based musical artists got behind the turntables to provide the soundtrack for the day. Things kicked off with dream-pop duo Puro Instinct, who took to the decks to play a set of their favorite tunes in advance of their upcoming full-length release. Next up was Knxwledge (or KNX), a beatmaker whose Stones Throw debut drops on May 5. Across the street at Space15Twenty, a special TV on the Radio RSD Art Party kicked off, with guitar player Dave Sitek DJing while vocalist Tunde Adebimpe and Seeds artist Julian Gross drew caricatures. Also at Space15Twenty, Org Music and Shinola provided free Pabst Blue Ribbon, previews of RSD-exclusive titles and a rousing set from Mike Watt + the Secondmen and EvKain.

Happy Record Store Day at Amoeba HollywoodThe line started forming in the wee hours of Saturday morning, as music fans jostled to get a prime spot in the queue for Record Store Day 2015 at Amoeba Hollywood. Our friends at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf were on hand to pass out coffee and pastries to our dedicated morning visitors while they filled out their lists of the Record Store Day exclusive releases they hoped to score. Behind-the-scenes, our busy Amoeba elves got to work filling orders. For the hundreds standing outside, the wait was finally worth it when they could cop the special, limited release LPs they’d been hoping for. Visitors could also grab a special Amoeba goodie bag featuring Converse Chuck Taylor art designed by Amoeba employees (including one pictured below featuring work by store co-owner Marc Weinstein) and packed with all kinds of awesome surprises.

We talked to the vinyl enthusiasts in line at Amoeba this morning to find out what they were looking for this year and why they love vinyl so much.
