Deconstructing the Perfect Mashup with Adrian (A Plus D, Bootie SF) and Remixer/Producer Shahar Varshal

"Timber Party" Pitbull ft Kesha vs Rihanna vs RedNex vs Garbage (Shahar Varshal Mashup) (2014)

Last weekend at the weekly Bootie SF party in San Francisco when DJ Mysterious D dropped the above mashup track into her mix the already packed and energized DNA Lounge dancefloor revved into full-on party mode dancing with wild abandon to the mashup that pitch-perfectly blends elements of '90's hits by both Garbage and RedNex with the current era hits by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha ("Timber") and Rihanna  ("What Now"). It was no wonder the Saturday night club goers responded so well to the Shahar Varshal produced "Timber Party" since the remix qualifies as the perfect mashup - one that expertly builds upon each of its elements so that the whole is even greater than the sum of its already spectacular parts.

In the case of the "Timber Party" mashup, producer Varshal takes two already great contemporary pop songs ("Timber" released late last year as a single off Pitbull's 2013 release Global Warming: Meltdown and Rihanna's hugely popular 2013 single "What Now") but elevates both to new heights by melding the best of the two together (the Rihanna vocal only here) and adding in perfectly chosen parts of both RedNex (usually fun but kinda cheesy, guilty pleasure) 1994 hit single "Cotton Eye Joe," and the vocals from 90's alt rock, female fronted band Garbage's breakout 1995 hit single "I'm Only Happy When It Rains"  - making Shirley Manson's sultry vocals sound even better than on the original by giving her a whole new instrumental backdrop thanks to the Pitbull track and matching her up with Rihanna - the most unlikely yet perfect pairing of voices - and all the while anchoring the song with the Ke$ha "I'm yelling timber" chorus vocal as the song's main hook.

"The Monster Show" Headlines at "San Fransexual" Club Bootie SF's Pre-Pride Extravaganza Tonight at the DNA Lounge

In celebration of this year's LGBT Pride Month and as a warm-up to next weekend's mega SF Pride Parade & festival celebrations the ever-active bookers at Bootie SF are presenting The Monster Show tonight at their DNA Lounge weekly party. "We are totally ready to get our gay on as Pride nears, and it doesn't get much gayer than The Monster Show," said the promoters of the popular, long-running weekly mashup party earlier this week.

At tonight's Bootie SF Pre Pride Party, in addition to the 11pm mashup drag extravaganza on the DNA main stage, Cookie Dough and the rest of the fun folks (who know how to party) from The Monster Show will also take over the upstairs area of the DNA when they will transform it into the Monster Electro-House Room. Described by the folks at Bootie as "unlike other drag shows, with breaks between the numbers, this is just one non-stop, mega-mixed show with a whole series of drag queens lip-syncing. You can watch the show and dance at the same time" The Monster Show at Bootie tonight should be hella fun.

Yesterday I reached out to The Monster Show's Cookie Dough to ask what to expect tonight at Bootie SF and for more insights into The Monster Show and its San Francisco history. "The Monster Show started in the Summer of 2004 at Harvey's in the heart of The Castro. At the time there were no other drag shows residing in The Castro, so we filled a much needed void of drag in The Pulse Of Gay Mecca," Cookie Dough told me. "What we have become known for are our non-stop continuous mixed shows; a sort of an assault-to-the-senses, created by co-founder and my DJ husband DJ MC2." Tonight DJ MC2 will be getting busy in the upstairs area of the DNA drawing from his three decades of turntable mixing history that Cookie Dough promised will be "a beat matched mix of house beats with some of todays hottest artists and remixers, along with a light show of lasers, fog, and dance lights moving with the energy of the room." Monster Party friend DJ Guy Ruben will also be spinning upstairs (set time 10:45pm to midnight). Meanwhile downstairs on the main stage from 11pm to 11:30pm, Cookie Dough said "We will give the Monster Bootie fans our 7th Annual Pride Show with Bootie; an in-your-face mash up of electrifying drag queens from all around San Francisco."

Now Entering Ninth Year of Their Successful Mashup Party, Bootie SF's Tireless Duo of A+D Show No Signs Of Slowing Down

Posted by Billyjam, August 20, 2011 01:54pm | Post a Comment

Last Saturday night at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco, the tirelessly hard-working duo of A+D (a.k.a. Adrian and Mysterious D - the DJs / promoters / remixers and producers of the ever-popular weekly mashup club Bootie SF and the myriad of similarly themed Bootie parties they oversee in numerous cities including New York and Los Angeles) celebrated their 8th year anniversary with a mega blow out party at the packed-to-capacity SF club.

In true tradition, the hardworking pair didn't simply play music for people to dance to at last weekend's party, but instead went above and beyond the typical duties of club promoters by putting on a huge production -- one that filled the club with festive streamersand NYE style balloons ready to drop, a full concert by their spinoff live mash up band Smash Up Derby (a bad ass six-piece featuring Adrian on lead vocals) whose mixedmedia set included an informative history of the mashup projected onto a largescreen, and600complimentary mashup compilation CDs pressed especially for the occasion. They also gave away pairs of their Bootie brand headphones.

Their DJ sets featured many mashups they produced themselves, including their inspired "Girl Power" mashup of Kreayshawn's "Gucci Gucci," which cleverly blends in Toni Basil, The Go Go's, Le TIgre, The Ting Tings, and The Trashwomen (Kreayshawn's mom's old band).  And when they dropped it into the mix at 1am, the new track set the packed dancefloor into a screaming frenzy.
