Recap: April Charity Auction to Benefit Silverlake Conservatory

Silverlake conservatory of musicOn Saturday, April 6th, we had comedian Dave Ross as our guest auctioneer for April's charity auction benefiting Silverlake Conservatory. He auctioned off a crazy array of items, from movie and music collectibles to concert tickets and gift certificates. And as always, Amoeba matched all individual bids.

Dave Ross is a stand-up comedian and storyteller in Los David rossAngele. He is the creator of the wildly successful Holy F*ck comedy show and a MOTH GrandSlam winner. You might have seen him on Tosh.0 with his sketch group, WOMEN, or heard him telling stories on KCRW. But up on the podium at Amoeba's monthly charity aution is where he really shined. His extremely dry and droll sense of humor had the shoppers and onlookers chuckling under their collectives breaths and looking over at each other as if to say, "Wait, did he just say what I think he said?"

Silverlake Conservatory is a non-profit organization, created in 2001 to fill a void in the cultural landscape of the community. They offer the people in the area the opportunity to study music with exceptional teachers at a reasonable price, while also donating lessons and instruments to deserving children. They will also be the Hollywood store’s RECORD STORE DAY beneficiary for our prize wheel and the live silkscreening.

Dave Ross helped us raise a great amount of money, all going directly to music education for needy kids and families in Silver Lake and Echo Park, via Silverlake Conservatory!

World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books! Tens of thousands of people will share books with others in their communities across America, spreading the joy and love of reading on April book night

Join Amoeba Hollywood as we distribute FREE paperback copies of the Ray Bradbury classic Fahrenheit 451 upon request. Just ask for your copy at the info counter on the main floor. Quantities will be limited, so it's first come, first served.

The internationally acclaimed Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future. Although it was written over half a century ago, this classic is incredibly relevant to modern culture and critical of our dependence on technology.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television. When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known. He starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, the fireman has to run for his life.
