Recap: May Charity Auction to Benefit YOLA

Posted by Amoebite, May 6, 2013 02:15pm | Post a Comment

It was almost Cinco de Mayo and everyone at Amoeba was drunk! Well...OK, not really. But people were bidding as if they were drunk (on Tequila and agua de melon spiked with Cuervo).

Taco USAOn Saturday, May 4 we had a lighting-speed auctioneer, bestselling author Gustavo Arellano, hosting our Cuatro de Mayo charity auction to raise money for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA). He was also available after the auction to sign copies of his book, Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America.

In case you're not familiar, Gustavo is also a lecturer with the Chicana and Chicano Studies department at California State University, Fullerton. He writes “¡Ask a Mexican!,” a nationally syndicated column in which he answers any and all questions about America’s spiciest and largest minority. The column has a weekly circulation of over 2 million in 39 newspapers across the United States, won the 2006 and 2008 Association of Alternative Weeklies award for Best Column. In addition, Gustavo is a lifelong resident of Orange County and is the proud son of two Mexican immigrants (one of whom was illegal).

YOLAThe recipient of Saturday's auction was Gustavo Dudamel's Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) program – inspired by Venezuela's revolutionary El Sistema. The LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, enabling every child to contribute using their full potential. YOLA changes lives – one child, one family, one community at a time.

New "What's In My Bag?" Episode With Tim & Eric

Posted by Amoebite, April 30, 2013 02:46pm | Post a Comment

Tim & Eric

The awkwardly hilarious comedy duo Tim & Eric are some of the busiest funnymen in showbiz. Gaining legions of cult-like fans from their successful Adult Swim shows (Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and Tom Goes to the Mayor), Tim & Eric continue to bless us with more left field content via their popular website, timanderic.com. They also recently partnered up with fellow comedians Sarah Silverman, Reggie Watts and Michael Cera to launch the new Jash Network YouTube channel. If you simply can't be fulfilled by Internet videos, then pick up Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie. If you need even more Tim & Eric, grab the new film that stars the pair alongside LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy, The Comedy

Tim & Eric wandered into Amoeba Hollywood in search of very specific and maybe even peculiar selections. We got it all on video for another awesome episode of What's In My Bag?. Find out which of the two is a fan of a famous Mexican comedian and which one needs two copies of a 30 Seconds To Mars album. Oh yeah, and check out their very funny impromtu cover of Smash Mouth's "All Star."

They don't just talk vinyl, they've got a few interesting book selections too. One in particular is Slim Diamond's book of Pimpoetry.  Oh yes, JEFF the Brotherhood is big pimpin' when it comes to digging for vinyl!

Record Store Day 2013 at Amoeba Hollywood - Part 2

Posted by Amoebite, April 20, 2013 07:03pm | Post a Comment

Record Store Day moved into Saturday afternoon at Amoeba Hollywood with a DJ set by Lance Rock, a former Amoebite and current Yo Gabba Gabba! ringleader. Lance has always had exceptional musical taste and it was a treat to hear his soundtrack for one of our busiest days of the year. A handful of kids turned out, excited to see DJ Lance Rock in person.

Next up was Lucinda Williams, who chatted with fans and picked out a playlist of her favorite songs, including gypsy jazz, Mark Lanegan and Chelsea Light Moving.

It was been an incredibly busy morning (and afternoon) with the lines wrapping around the store. The main line for the registers even extended into the jazz room and bumped up against the prize wheel line at one point! But by about 5pm, things had slowed just enough to let us move the line for RSD13 titles into the store and put the remaining releases on the floor.
