New "What's In My Bag?" Episode with New York Pop Duo MS MR

Posted by Amoebite, August 22, 2013 04:20pm | Post a Comment

MS MR is the New York based indie-pop duo who craft excellent produced electronic-coated candy for your ears. If you have yet to hear what the Internet hype is about, then you are definitely missing out. MS MR hit the scene last year with their debut single, "Hurricane," a dark love story with plush vocals backed by deep drums and dreamy synths. The Internet loved it. Vocalist Lizzy Plapinger often draws comparisons to Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine for her "raspy" vocals. Not a bad comparison at all! With Max Hershenow at the producer helm, MS MR are quickly gaining props in high places from the likes of Jay-Z and Usher. Looks like pop stardom is not too far away.

Early this year, MS MR dropped their major label debut with Secondhand Rapture (Colombia Records). The entire album was produced and written by the dynamic duo, including the handling of the album's art direction and design. The release is chock full of what is quickly becoming MS MR's signature dream pop arrangements: layered synths, big tight programmed drums and lavishly polished vocals. The twelve song release makes for a very ear pleasing experience.

Thanks to Your Generosity, We're Sending $600 to Downtown Women's Center

Pancake BreakfastOn Sunday morning, August 11, hundreds of hungry Angelenos descended upon the historic Vibiana downtown for the third annual LA Weekly Pancake Breakfast! Curated by Evan Kleiman, restaurateur and host of Good Food on KCRW, attendees were treated to samples from over 20 local restaurants. Amoeba was on hand with our prize wheel, making friends, passing out our own (non-edible, I'm afraid) goodies and raising money for the Downtown Women's Center.

Amoebite Michele'le was our pro behind the prize wheel, encouraging people to win "big money" and avoid the "whammy's." For only $1 a spin, folks could win gift certificates to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, Stella Barra (the yummy new pizzeria next to Amoeba), surprise gifts and more. For a $5 donation to DWC, people received a complimentary Amoeba tote bag or t-shirt. One amazing woman even donated $25!

It wasn't just about the food on Sunday. Country singer Lynda Kay stopped by after wooing her fans with a performance, posing for a few photos and signing autographs at our booth.

New "What's In My Bag?" Video With Aussie Singer Clairy Browne

Posted by Amoebite, August 14, 2013 05:55pm | Post a Comment

Clairy Browne just might be the new "thunder from down under." The feisty songstress fronts the 9-piece Melbourne, Australia based group, Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes. The band is known for their retro-soul sound similar to that of Fitz and the Tantrums while drawing some comparisons to the late Amy Winehouse. Backed by three female vocalists, the ladies pull off some tight harmonies a la The Supremes. The rhythm section is super tight and funky, most definitely worthy of a James Brown co-sign. And do not forget that signature baritone sax! The kid can blow! Fresh off the US release of their debut, Baby Caught The Bus (Vanguard), Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes are quickly becoming the next big thing. Be sure to catch them when their live show hits the States.

Clairy Browne stopped by Amoeba Hollywood to do a little record shopping. This is one memorable episode with a great story of Clairy's "issue with misheard lyrics." Too funny! She picks out some really cool records like neo-soul pioneer Erykah Badu's New Amerykah Part 1 and contemporary R&B crooner Frank Ocean's Channel Orange. Clairy even declares that Outkast is "like my favorite band ever."  She's got great taste in hip hop! See which '90s female rappers Clairy loves to listen to. Not only does Clairy get down with the funk and soul, but she also rocks out to some heavy metal! She digs up
Black Sabbath's seminal record, Paranoid, which is highly regarded as the band's magnum opus. Clairy Browne knows good music!
