Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five Week Ending 07:11:14

1)  Quasimoto "Planned Attack" / Talkin' Shit" [Picture Disc] (7") (Stones Throw)

2) Big Freedia Just Be Free (Queen Diva)

3) Danny Brown Hot Soup (Street Corner Music)

4) 9th Wonder The Wonder Years (T.e.g.)

5) G-Eazy  These Things Happen (BPG)

Locking down the number chart position this week at Amoeba Hollywood is not an album but a 7" single: the excellent, collector's item, picture disc single, via Stones Throw, from Madlib alter-ego Quasimoto (aka Lord Quas) "Planned Attack" / Talkin' Shit" The side "Planned Attack" is culled from the album Yessir Whatever while the "Talkin Shit" side is a short, previously unreleased track with both featuring and produced by Madlib, artwork by Jeff Jank, and described by the Peanut Butter Wolf headed label as "Quasimoto X-ray record.  Half picture disc, half clear vinyl. Lord Quas with brick on one side, and his "insides" show on the flip.  Delivered in a clear polybag." Also charting are Oakland rapper G-Eazy's major label debut  These Things Happen (BPG), 9th Wonder's The Wonder Years (which has been out for a minute but is a chart re-entry), and the ever-prolific and talented Danny Brown's Hot Soup on Street Corner Music - a reissue of his mixtape from 2008.

The other new chart entry this week is from Big Freedia (aka the queen of sissy bounce): the album Just Be Free  on the appropriately named Queen Diva label. The new album from the artist who many got introduced to via the artist's reality show on Fuse TV (Queen of Bounce Wednesdays 11pm, now in its second season) is described by Amoeba.com as as, "Big Freedia’s moment to step into the mainstream, and she does so successfully without dumbing down her sound. “Dangerous’” bullet-fire beats and Big Freedia’s command to wiggle make it impossible not to oblige. “N O Bounce” calls out her hometown of New Orleans (home of sissy bounce) with some jazzy horns and piano alongside a crushing beat and cut up vocals looped hypnotically. The uninitiated still might feel overwhelmed by Just Be Free’s non-stop onslaught—listening is a little like being in the most intense workout session of your life. But we’d rather hear her still uninhibited rather than soften the songs with pointless ballads or something. When Big Freedia shouts “RELEASE YOUR WIGGLE, RELEASE YOUR ANGER, RELEASE YOUR MIND, RELEASE YOUR JOB” on “Explode,” it’s best to give in." Along with Big Freedia's video for the song "Explode" off the new album, below are a couple of other new videos including Smoke DZA's track "Hearses" that features a guest spot by Ab-Soul. The DJ Dahi-directed track's video is directed by Goldrush. Another video is a music meets interview video on new UK emcee Little Simz - shot on her recent trip to New York.
