Amoeba Music Hollywood Hip-Hop Top Five: Week Ending 07:05:13
1) Kanye West Yeezus (Def Jam)
2) Quasimoto Yessir, Whatever (Stones Throw)
3) J. Cole Born Sinner (Columbia)
4) Mac Miller Watching Movies With The Sound Off (Rostrum Records)
5) Wale The Gifted (Atlantic)
The above new hip-hop chart from Amoeba Music Hollywood includes five albums that have also been selling well at both the Berkeley and San Francisco Amoebas and (I'm guessing) will likely remain popular albums all summer long. These include DC area rapper Wale's guest heavy new album The Gifted, Kanye West's much talked about latest full-length Yeezus, J. Cole's Born Sinner (Columbia), Mac Miller's Watching Movies With The Sound Off, and Quasimoto's Yessir, Whatever on Stones Throw which, while not brand new recordings, are new to most ears and well worth getting. As E-Lit at the Berkeley Amoeba store noted last week, the Yessir, Whatever cover was designed as a peel-off sticker design as pictured right.
Friend of Amoeba Music Pete Rock is getting set to drop his new latest album project. To be titled 80 Blocks from Tiffany's Pt II (cover below) it will be released late this month and will feature several guest appearances including such artists as Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, and Talib Kweli. Last Sunday afternoon Deltron 3030 (Del The Funky Homosapien, Dan The Automator, and Kid Koala) did a free show at Stern Grove in San Francisco where they were accompanied by a full orchestra in support of their (soon to be released) long overdue Deltron Event II follow up album. I missed the show but everyone I know who attended reported that it was off the hook. Below is a fan video clip from the show to give you a taste of the concert.
There are several other videos below too including the amazing Sean Michael Williams and Gus Winkelman made music video for "All These Lights" from The Grouch & Eligh vs Pretty Lights. The video has some incredible shots of the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area. Also with shots of the Bay Area (Oakland to be precise including down by Lake Merritt) is the brand new second video off of Oakland, CA emcee Celsius 7's album "Life Well Spent" that was produced by Hiright and Celsius 7 and directed by Yesyouareproductions. Another new Bay Area music video below is the latest from San Francisco rapper Iamsu! for the song "Father God" that director HBKGADGET made the accompanying video that was premiered earlier this week by Rolling Stone. Also below is the KNT (Knuckle Neck Tribe) retrospective video of the Bay Area crew and their affiliations with both Souls of Mischief and QBert and FM20. Finally there is the audio with comic book images video of Murs collaborating with Devil’s Due Entertainment to create the comic book ‘Yumiko: Curse of the Merch Girl.’ To accompanying the comic book, Murs recorded the soundtrack that includes the song “Love” below that was for Chapter 1 of the comic book and album that will be released on July 16th.
