For this special edition of the New York State of Mind Amoeblog, I'm posting a series of pictures (mostly taken in recent weeks around Manhattan as well as a couple of other spots not far from Manhattan) that tell a story of what New York City has to offer. If you move your cursor over the photos most of them have some accompanying text that will identify their location or offer other related information.

Legendary NYC jazz club the Village Vanguard is on 7th Avenue in Greenwich Village - a location where such greats as Sonny Rollins recorded albums at.

New York City is where many national TV shows are recorded/broadcast live on a daily basis - many filmed outside and hence open to the public to at least watch from closeby - this photo, which I took in early January at approx 715am on a weekday, is in the middle of Times Square on the set of "Good Morning America"

Stonewall Statues - celebrating gay rights and the fight for equality amongs the GLBT community - the park is right across from the Stonewall bar (see pic below)

Referenced last week during Obama's inaugural speech this is the landmark Stonewall Inn - which is highly symbolic in the fight for gay rights - dating back to the Stonewall Riots of 1969. Located on Christopher Street - near 6th and 7th Avenues the building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000.

The NYPL - New York Public Library aka The Main library is on Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets and even if you don't go to read this Beaux-Arts landmark building is a beautiful piece of architecture worh a visit. It also has various exhibits on display all the time.

I walked by this flyer (on a wall off Sixth Ave in Greenwich Village NYC) many times over a period of a month recently and then one day saw someone (finally) had tagged it - by writing the word "BAD" on it so had to take this photo. The fact it took so long for someone to even tag this flyer proves how much NYC has changed in a few short decades in terms of its attitude towards graffiti in NYC - once rampant, now rare.

with so many people and their pets condensed into such a small area as Manhattan - the amount of dogwalkers and their need-to-pee pets on the daily causes problems like killing off plants. Hence signs like this one taken on a well traveled downtown city sidewalk
