It’s still December 2012, but there’s plenty to get excited about heading into the new year, music- and movie-wise. Check out the preorders we have available below.
In addition, new records hitting shelves early in the year include new records by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Spring), the late, great Broadcast (The Berberian Sound Studio [Soundtrack], Jan. 8), Frightened Rabbit (Pedestrian Verse, Feb. 5), Unknown Mortal Orchestra (II, Feb. 5), Azealia Banks (Broke With Expensive Taste, Feb. 12), Veronica Falls (Waiting for Something to Happen, Feb. 12), Beach Fossils (Clash the Truth, Feb. 19), Iceage (You’re Nothing, Feb. 19), Girls Names (The New Life, Feb. 29), Johnny Marr (The Messenger, Feb. 26), The Mary Onettes (Hit the Waves, March 12), Low (The Invisible Way, March 19), Wavves (Title TBA, March 26), The Knife (Shaking the Habitual, April 9) and, of course, Guided by Voices (English Little League, April 30). My Bloody Valentine are supposedly releasing their long-awaited follow-up to 1991’s classic Loveless, the favorite album of many a music nerd, as they’ve just announced via their Facebook page that they finished mastering their new album. Any MBV fan knows that recording, let alone mixing, let alone mastering a new album by the shoegaze titans is a painfully long and arduous process at best, so this is very exciting news! Though supposedly the record will come out on their website first, we’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything about a new, physical My Bloody Valentine LP.

In the movie world, we’ll see the second installment of the The Hobbit, haters be damned. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is due Dec. 13. Superhero movies will abound, from the hotly anticipated Zack Snyder-directed, Christopher Nolan-produced, sexy Henry Cavil-starring Man of Steel (June 14) to the second Wolverine movie, The Wolverine (July 26), which was once going to be helmed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) but now is directed by James Mangold (of such excellent films as Kate & Leopold, also starring Hugh Jackman). Jurassic Park 3D (April 5), Iron Man 3 (May 3), Star Trek: Into Darkness (May 17), After Earth (June 7), World War Z (June 21), Kick-Ass 2 (June 28), The Lone Ranger (July 3), 300: Rise of an Empire (Aug. 2), Ender’s Game (Nov. 1), Thor: The Dark Worlds (Nov. 8) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Nov. 22) round out the fanboy and fangirl realm. Sure-to-be-useless remakes Carrie (March 15) and The Evil Dead (April 12) are coming out, as are likely terrible movies Texas Chainsaw 3D (Jan. 4), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (March 29), Scary Movie 5 (April 12), Fast and Furious
6 (May 24), The Hangover: Part III (May 24) and Riddick (Sept. 6). Two new “Oz” movies will come out: the animated Dorothy of Oz (TBA) and the Sam Raimi-directed Oz: The Great and Powerful (March 8). The kiddies will also have Escape from Planet Earth (Feb. 14), Jack the Giant Slayer (March 1), The Croods (March 22), EPIC (May 24), Monsters University (June 21), Despicable Me 2 (July 3), Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (Aug. 16) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 (Sept. 27). The drama realm will see new films by Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick, Ridley Scott, Danny Boyle, Steven Soderbergh and The Coen Brothers, among others. As always, movie and album release dates are subject to change. The movie I’m most looking forward to is Anchorman: The Legend Continues, coming out Dec. 20. Stay classy, Amoeblog readers.
