|John Cale at Amoeba Hollywood Oct. 26, 2005|
Famed Welsh singer, songwriter, viola player and former member of The Velvet Underground John Cale is performing in support of his latest release, the adventurous Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood. That album finds Cale trying on a number of new guises, occasionally augmenting his baritone voice with autotune and building out his futuristic love songs with electronic production and lyrics about vampires and other strange beasts. He’s also recently been playing songs off of his classic Paris 1919 record.
He’s joined at this show by California-born singer/songwriter Cass McCombs, a similarly prolific and tough-to-pin-down artist who defies convention. Last year, McCombs released two great albums, the moody Wit’s End and its relatively poppy counterpart, Humor Risk, both of which display a mature songwriter’s gift for arrangement and wit that is rare to find in this generation of songwriters.
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is the totally awesome nom de plum of UK-born producer and DJ Orlando Higginbottom, whose music as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs strings together various forms of electronic music, from Europop and house to indie electro-pop, in the interest of creating memorable tunes as good for the club as they are for a pair of headphones. His acclaimed debut album Trouble was released this year, while Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs also has remixed the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.
Be sure to catch two more Amoeba Presents shows early next year at the El Rey Theatre: Revenge of the 80s starring Midge Ure & Bow Wow Wow on Jan. 26, while indie rockers Ra Ra Riot will appear Feb. 12. Tickets are now on sale at Amoeba Hollywood!
