MellowHype – “Grill”
Here’s the next song from Odd Future’s MellowHype, which will be on their album Numbers, out Oct. 9. The duo’s warped hip-hop is on fine display on “Grill,” as their doubled vocals spell out their name and rap smoke circles around everyone else. Out next week, you can preorder Numbers here.
Trash Talk – “Exile on Broadway”
Speaking of Odd Future, sounds like OFWGKTA associates Trash Talk are trying to become the hardcore Rolling Stones with “Exile on Broadway” and the Exile on Main St. referencing album art for 119, which is out Oct. 9. Lofty goals, but you can’t argue with the quality and ferocity of a track like this. Stream “Exile on Broadway” here, and preorder 119 here.
Young & Sick – “House of Spirits”
If you go to L.A. group Young & Sick’s Soundcloud page for “House of Spirits,” they’ve even put up the totally creepy lyrics for this indie R&B gem. It’s not every day someone releases a track this perfectly soulful with subtle electronic flourishes and lyrics about loving someone so much you want to be drowned in a car with them. I love it! This is self-released for now, but I’m sure someone will get around to releasing Young & Sick music soon.
Devon Williams – “Savor”
L.A.-based singer/songwriter Devon Williams released Euphoria, a terrific slab of jangle rock with real pop smarts, on Slumberland last year. Now he returns with “Savor,” a sparkling example of what he does so well, with a big swoony new romantic chorus. The single is due Nov. 20 from New Images; it’ll be on his next full-length record as well, due in Spring.
King Tuff – “Screaming Skull”
After his excellent self-titled debut record released earlier this year, the L.A.-based garage pop artist is releasing this single, not a Sonic Youth cover but rather a brand new song releasing as a 7” single from Sub Pop Oct. 9. This fizzy, two-chord stomper sounds like it was bashed out quickly in the best way possible, all hooks and no filler. I think he’ll just keep getting better!
Inc. – “The Place” video
Not sure where the place is — L.A. River? Angeles National Forest? Seems pretty chill. There’s two dudes, a deer and some mellow indie R&B floating in the background, sort of like a glossed up How to Dress Well from two guys who should know — they spent years recording and touring with pop acts like Elton John, Pharell Williams, Beck, Cee-Lo etc., according to their 4AD page. They also used to be called Teen Inc.; now just plain Inc. They have some smaller releases out on 4AD already and will release their debut album next year.
This weekend is both Filter’s Culture Collide Festival with Of Montreal, Laetitia Sadier, Zola Jesus, School of Seven Bells, The Big Pink and lots more; and the Eagle Rock Music Festival, with High Places, DJ sets from Peaking Lights and Daedelus, Peanut Butter Wolf, Imperial Teen, La Sera and local bands like So Many Wizards, Tijuana Panthers and Apple Brains. It’s also CicLAvia. (Seinfeld voice) What’s the deal with this scheduling? Ride your bike around the city and check all of it out if you can!
