Just how popular an item is the brand new Kendrick Lamar album Good Kid M.A.A.D City  at Amoeba Hollywood? So popular that the SoCal artist's release, which arrived in Amoeba on Monday this week (Oct 22nd), is in a three way tie with itself for the number one chart position. That is the three formats it comes in: regular CD version, the Deluxe CD version, and the LP version of Good Kid M.A.A.D City all tying for that coveted number one slot in the latest Amoeba Hip-Hop Top Five chart. I think of this album as Straight Outta Compton Version 2012 aka the return of the West Coast. XXL magazine has dubbed it "a future classic" while Ameoblogger Billy Gil called Good Kid M.A.A.D City "the sound of extraordinary promise achieved" and  "as intricate, strange and thoroughly addictive an album as anyone could have hoped to hear" citing as part of the reason for the artist's major label debut's success as Kendrick's list of accolades such as his acclaimed Section.80 mixtape from last year and his work with such icons as Drake and Dr. Dre. In fact it is Dre's Aftermath label who released the artist's twelve track major-label (via Universal) debut featuring the popular lead single "Swimming Pools (Drank)" (see video below) that Dr. Dre both executive-produced and mixed. Clocking in at one hour, eight minutes both the regular CD and the LP versions offer twelve tracks while the (much longer) Deluxe CD version contains an extra five bonus tracks.

Although it has been out for a few months already Karriem Riggins' highly recommended Stones Throw release Alone continues to sell well at the Hollywood store where it is number five this week. Other new chart entries include include Seattle rapper Macklemore's recent self-released The Heist and Vinnie Paz' God Of The Serengeti on Enemy Soil that is also available in vinyl / LP format.

Over the past two decades the Italian born American rapper Paz has built a strong and steady rep for himself through his membership of his Philly crew Jedi Mind Tricks, the hip hop supergroup Army of the Pharaohs, as well as his solo work that include his well received five mixtapes. God of the Serengeti is his follow up to 2010's Season of the Assassin. For the new album Paz has enlisted such collaborators as Kool G Rap, DJ Premier, Immortal Technique, R.A. The Rugged Man, Mobb Deep, and La Coka Nostra Paz for the raw, in-your-face, 18 track album that features the lead single / video for "Cheesesteaks" - his Philly anthem that dropped a few months in advance of the album (see below).

Rounding out this week's Top Five is the triumphant return of Los Angeles' Styles Of Beyond with their first official release in almost a decade. This new album Reseda Beach comes packaged as a 2CD set with Disc 1 featuring all new material and the bonus Disc 2 featuring tracks from the crew's Razor Rag mixtape which dropped back in 2007. Styles Of Beyond (aka S.O.B.) hit all the right notes with this new album which features the production of Vin Skully and Cheapshot plus Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda (plus others) with Ryu and Tak trading clever and catchy rhymes throughout. Shinoda also lends some vocals to the new album as do Apathy, Celph Titled, Scoop Deville (who also contributed to the new Lamar Kendricks album), Somaya Reece, Bishop Lamont, and Alex 2Tone.

Concerts in the Bay Area tonight include Oakland's Foreign Legion (Prozack Turner,Marc Stretch,Tim Diesel) doing a hometown show at The Night Light on Broadway and 4th Street downtown Oakland. Also performing will be Michael Wallstreet, Six Of Seven and Selecta Bc. It will be a Halloween themed party with costumes encouraged, plus the evening will be hosted by East Bay comic Chris Riggins. 21+ For more concert and Night Light venue information click here.

And finally I leave you with the video for another currently extremely popular hip-hop artist Action Bronson and his brand new video "The Symbol" which is the first single from his forthcoming Alchemist produced mixtape 'Rare Chandeliers' produced. This throwback, lo-fi 70's gangsta flick styled video is directed by Rik Cordero.
