Zion I & The Grouch "Rockit Man (feat. Silk-E)" (2011) - this week's #1 @ Amoeba

Amoeba Music San Francisco Hip-Hop Top Five Week Ending March 25th, 2011

1) Zion I & The Grouch are Heroes in the Healing of the Nation (Z&G Music)

2) Pharoahe Monch W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) (W.A.R. Media/Duck Down Music)

3) Equipto & Michael Marshall Keep it Movin' 2 Love Changes-Solidarity Records

4) Raekwon Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang (Ice H2O Records)

5) Lupe Fiasco Lasers (Atlantic Recording Corp).

Thanks to Luis for this week's Amoeba Hip-Hop Top Five for the San Francisco store where the highly recommended new Zion I & The Grouch's latest collaborative album Zion I & The Grouch are Heroes in the Healing of the Nation is number one after only hitting Amoeba Music's shelves on Tuesday (March 22nd). A sequel to Zion I & The Grouch's similarly themed, successful 2006 collaboration, Heroes in the City of Dope, this latest teaming of hip-hop talent even surpasses that critically acclaimed release. Joining producer Amp Live and emcees Zumbi and The Grouch throughout this release are such guests as Fashawn, Casual, Mystic, Brother Ali, Eric Rachmany, Freeway, Roy Ayers, Jacob Hemphill of Soja, Eligh, Codany Holiday, The R.O.D., and Silk-E, whose soaring vocals elevate the single "Rockit Man," as seen in the brand new video above.

Another tight new release that came out this week is Pharoahe Monch's W.A.R.(We Are Renegades), which is only the third solo album in a dozen years (a long time by hip-hop standards) from the Queens, NY artist who first came to fame over two decades ago as one half of the renowned hip-hop duo Organized Konfusion. Released via Duck Down, the new album's release, which was delayed by several months, was first announced last year when Monch, who is probably best widely known as a solo artist for his 1999 hit single "Simon Says," was on tour with Slaughterhouse. Not surprisingly, the supergroup Slaughterhouse's Royce Da 5'9'' makes a guest spot here on the track "Assassins" alongside Jean Grae.

Other talents to join Monch include Immortal Technique, Vernon Reid, Styles P & Phonte, and Jill Scott. The album is tight and could well be a contender for one of the top five hip-hop albums of 2011. It packs socio-political tones alongside everyday in the hood observations and is sure to appeal to hip-hop fans from all walks and ages. Below is the video version of the album's second single, "Clap (One Day)," which was produced by M-Phazes and features Showtyme & DJ Boogie Blind. This extended ten minute video below, complete with a dramatic police raid gone dramatically wrong, was directed by Terence Nance and features appearances from Gbenga Akinnagbe (known for his portrayal of Chris Partlow in HBO's The Wire), Kim Howard and Josiah Small. If you cannot make it physically over to Amoeba to pick up this album, buy W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) online.

Equipto & Michael Marshall "Frustration (feat. Mistah F.A.B. & Dregs One)" (2011)

Fresh off the same West Coast tour, Equipto & Michael Marshall, who have recorded together in the past, have just released the collaborative full-length Keep it Movin' 2 Love Changes on Solidarity Records which includes such tracks as the heartfelt "Frustration" above featuring Mistah F.A.B. and Dregs One and the 420 anthem "Wakey Bakey" featuring Berner and (Mr Smoke-A-Lot) Yukmouth.

The 2011 DMC Battleground, the leading DJ battle series, is underway this weekend with the first battle happening tomorrow in Texas. The San Antonio club Korova (107 E. Martin St. San Antonio TX 78205) is where it is happening Saturday, March 26th, with showcase sets from Mista-B, OBX & DJ Techneeke, hosting by Donnie Dee, plus aerosol artistry by LAWS Crew and RTD. Battle DJs entrants to be announced at the event where the judges will be DJ Kico, Manila Ice & Mista-B. All ages event. 8pm show. More info.

Next weekend will be both the New Orleans DJ battle (April 1st) (more info here) and the Miami DJ battle (April 2nd). More info here. And the US finals will be in New York City this summer! More details on this exciting DJ battle to follow here on the Amoeblog in the coming months.

E-40 "My Lil Grimey Nigga (feat. Stressmatic)" (2011)

Scheduled for release next week are the two latest installments in the "Ambassador of the Bay" E-40's E-40 Overtime ShiftRevenue Retrievin' series: Revenue Retrievin' Overtime Shift and Revenue Retrievin' Graveyard Shift. Like the first two releases in this ambitious multiple album project, Revenue Retrievin' Day Shift and Revenue Retrievin' Night Shift, which were released back at the beginning of last year, Revenue Retrivin' albums number 3 & number 4 will likewise be released simultaneously.

Just like those widely popular first two releases in the series, the two new ones will also feature a ton of guest appearances (many Bay Area artists) such as Stressmatic, who makes a cameo on Revenue Retrievin' Graveyard Shift on the track "My Lil Grimey Nigga" for which Damon Jamal directed the above music video -- much of which was shot in Oakland. Stressmatic appears elsewhere on the new album including on the track "Rear View Mirror" with B-Legit. Other Retrivin' guests include Beeda Weeda, J-Stalin, Black C of RBL Posse, and Mike Marshall.

Marshall appears with fellow guest Dr. Cornel West on the inspiring track "Born In The Struggle," found on Azeemthe 20 track Overtime Shift CD. This installment also features an update on E-40's old-school classic "Mr Flamboyant," reworked and retitled "Mr. Flamboyant 2k11." LiveWire's J-Stalin appears on Overtime Shift while the omnipresent Oakland crew's Philthy Rich and Stevie Joe appear together on Graveyard Shift on the track "Don't Try This At Home."

And finally, I leave you with another brand new Bay Area hip-hop video shot in Oakland, CA. This one is from Azeem and Creme De La Ultra for the killer track "Strange Love" and was shot on a rooftop not far from Downtown Oakland and produced by Anas Canon for Remarkable Current. Currently, Azeem, who you'll recall four years ago released the killer single "Oakland to Brooklyn" on Oaklyn Records, is currently out staying temporarily in Brooklyn, NY, where he has been for the past few weeks handling business and setting up some gigs and events.
