Amoeba Music San Francisco Weekly Hip-Hop Top Five Chart: 10:29:10
1) Lyrics Born As U Were (Decon)
2) Von Pea Pea's Gotta Have It (Interdependent Media)
3) Skillz The World Needs More (Big Kids Music)
4) 2Mex My Fanbase Will Destroy You (Strange Famous Records)
5) Cunninlynguists Presents: Kno-Death is Silent (A Piece of Strange Music)
Lyrics Born's newest studio album, As U Were on Decon, arrived at Amoeba Music on Tuesday (Oct 26) and within three days shot to number one on this week's hip-hop chart for the San Francisco store. With a diverse and accessible sound that ranges from old school disco beats ("Coulda Woulda Shoulda") & old school electro (think Bambaataa) to post-hyphy Bay rap ("Black Bots"), alternative grooves and more, the album features guest spots from Lyrics Born's long time Solesides/Quannum rhyme buddies The Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Lateef (who joins him on both "I Wanna B W/U" & "Pushed Aside / Pulled Apart"). Other contributors include Sam Sparro, Trackademics, and Francis and the Lights. The low points on the 15 track As U Were CD are the three unnecessary & not-funny skits, while the high points include the sharp critical commentary on prescription drugs, "Pillz (feat. The Gift of Gab)" and the mad raw & fast breakbeat driven "Oh, Baby!" To coincide with the new album, Lyrics Born's Auto Reverse tour is currently underway along with fellow Decon artists Rakaa and Chali 2na. There is one week left of the tour that stops in Victor, ID tonight at Knotty Pine and finishes next Friday (11/05) at Dante's in Portland, OR. Meanwhile, to peep pics of Lyrics Born doing an instore at Amoeba San Francisco back in '03 click here.
Von Pea "The Yorker" (2010)
The brand new song above, "The Yorker," is taken from the recently released album Pea's Gotta Have It (Interdependent Media) by Tanya Morgan's Von Pea. The recommended solo debut album by the artist is a concept project themed around the talented rapper/producer's high school days. The CD's liner notes offer much more detailed insights on this theme, so buy the CD. Other new releases out this week and on the latest Amoeba Hip-Hop Top Five chart include Skillz' The World Needs More on Big Kids Music and featuring cameos from Bilal, Raheem DeVaughn, Mamouna Youseff, and Joe Tann; and My Fanbase Will Destroy You by legendary Los Angeles underground hip hop mic-wrecker 2Mex, who hasn't been heard from for a minute.
For this new release (which has to be the best album title of the year), the artist, whose 15 year career includes membership in the Visionaries, and who was featured on one of the Amoeba Music Compilations back in the day, returns in full force care of Sage Francis' label Strange Famous Records with a 15 track album that is all killer and squanders no space. The gifted & versatile emcee is joined by such talents as Murs, Nobody, Prince Po, Busdriver, Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta), and Ceschi. A free download of the album's lead single “Dead Hand Control," which is produced by Owens and Deeskee (Shapeshifters), is available from Strange Famous by clicking here. This week's other new chart entry is Cunninlynguists Presents: Kno-Death is Silent (A Piece of Strange Music) on which Kno of the Southern trio steps back from the mic (mostly) and handles production for numerous other studio guests to let loose on.
The brand new Ninja Tune Records box set Ninja Tune XX celebrates 20 years by the London based label started by DJs Matt Black and Jonathan More (aka Coldcut). Two NorCal rap legends, C-Bo and Yukmouth, have teamed up again to record a new album under their super rap duo name Thug Lordz. Casual "Rock My Shit" (2010)
Above + below are two new videos from Oakland's Hieroglyphics camp, including the latest from Casual, the DJ Fresh produced track "Rock My Shit"(video directed by Linz) from his forthcoming He STILL Think He Raw (a kind of sequel to 2001's He Still Think He Raw). Also new from the Hieros is the latest video from the Souls of Mischief's album Montezuma's Revenge; the Prince Paul produced release dropped last December and was the first album from the Oakland group in a decade. The new video is for for album track "Won One" and is produced by Don Tyler, who takes the veteran East Bay hip-hoppers through several city settings in the music video, including the Golden Gate Bridge. Pick up Montezuma's Revenge at Amoeba Music now and look for the new Casual joint sometime in 2011.

Sunday may be October 31st, but Halloween parties and events are taking place also tonight and tomorrow. There are way too many happening in the Bay Area this weekend to list here but a few of note include tonight's I'm A muthafuckin' MONSTER! Costume Party @ Mighty with a slew of DJs including Shortkut and DJ Apollo. The longtime Bay Area master turntablist/party rocker DJ Apollo will be spinning at another Halloween party tomorrow night -- the Hi Def Halloween Special -- where he holds down a residency. Also in the house will be guest DJ Haylow, spinning a special 2 hour Halloween video set with lots of spine tingling "evil" images promised. Hi Def is at 9pm Sat Oct 30th at 360 Ritch Street. Also in San Francisco tomorrow (Saturday, when most of the Halloween parties are planned) is the slightly mysterious Mochipet's Halloween Bus Party to Freaker's Ball and Otherworld & Video Shoot.
"Start out at a secret preparty location in San Francisco where u will meet Mochipet & Friends as you get ready for this Wild Adventure with provided party favors and special Halloween treats as you suit up with our provided dinosaur gear," is what happens between 7pm and 9pm according to Mochipet of Daly City Records. Then at 9pm, "We will embark on Mochipet's Halloween Bus to take a little cruz around San Francisco full of surprises before arriving at your first party location." No exact details on the where or when but the first batch of tickets sold out so fast they booked a second bus for this event. Full details on the video shoot and tickets and times by clicking here.
And finally, in the spirit of Halloween, I leave you with the Geto Boys' video for their 1991 classic single, the Halloween themed "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" with that memorable Bushwick Bill line "This year Halloween fell on the weekend, Me and Geto Boys are trick or treating."
