Amoeba Music San Francisco Weekly Hip-Hop Top Five Chart: 10:22:10
1) Lil Wayne I Am Not a Human Being (Cash Money/Universal Records)
2) Atmosphere To All My Friends (Rhymesayers Entertainment)
3) Foreign Exchange Authenticity (Foreign Exchange Music)
4) Trademark Da Skydiver Super Villain-Issue #2 (iHipHop Distribution)
5) Pigeon John Dragon Slayer (Quannum Projects)
Thanks to Luis at the Amoeba Music San Francisco store for this week's hip-hop top five chart. The still incarcerated Lil Wayne is at the top of the chart with his latest CD I Am Not a Human Being, which continues to garner positive reviews and sales round the country. He continues to cool his heels in solitary confinement in Riker's Island in New York for the next two weeks and is scheduled to be released on November 4th. Let's hope for his sake that at once released he can stay out of trouble and out of jail and that people can pack away their "Free Weezy" t-shirts for good. And while I Am Not a Human Being is way better, nearly all agree, than last year's long delayed Rebirth, it is clearly not as strong an album as 2008's The Carter III. Human Being was rush recorded right before Weezy began his stint behind bars and there are cameos many from his Young Money crew, including Drake, who makes five appearances here. As an album that was rush-recorded, it is a damn good offering but my guess is that once Lil Wayne gets out of jail and is free to go into the studio to record The Carter IV that he will truly appreciate his freedom and deliver perhaps the best work of his career.
Also on the new Amoeba chart this week are Foreign Exchange (Authenticity), Trademark Da Skydiver (Super Villain-Issue #2), and LA wordsmith Pigeon John with his highly recommended latest Dragon Slayer on Quannum Projects. The other new chart entry is Atmosphere's To All My Friends on which Rhymesayers emcee Slug displays his engaging style on songs such as the upbeat track “The Best Day” and the more downer song "Major Leagues," which tackles him losing a good friend to drugs.
Speaking of losing a friend to drugs, many have speculated that Slug's fellow Rhymesayers Entertainment emcee Eyedea, who was found dead Sunday at age 28, had been a victim of a drug overdose, but the artist's mother and a rep for his hometown St Paul Police have asked people to not rush to any conclusions until the toxicology results come in, which could take several more weeks. According to authorities there was no foul play or signs of trauma, nor did the artist have a history of substance-abuse problems. Rest in peace, MIkey "Eyedea" Larsen.
As predicted here last week, last Friday's Die Antwoord in-store at Amoeba San Francisco was a mad event. Click here for a full run down. New releases in the coming week include Lyrics Born's new album As U Were (Decon), which will arrive in Amoeba on Tuesday (Oct 26th). Below is one of the songs, "Lies X 3," off the album. The video is directed by Yoram Benz.

Dj Shiftee's ode to the DMC's Golden Years
Last weekend in Camden, London the 2010 DMC World Championships took place and in first place was LigOne from France (left, with DMC top dude Tony Prince), runner up was Co-Ma (Japan), and in third place (also from Japan) DJ Blu. Meanwhile, DJ Switch was the 2010 World Battle Champ.
In honor of this year's big battle, former DMC champ DJ Shiftee has put together The Golden Years (video above), which is the DJ's ever-engaging time-traveling journey through DMC history, capturing in a few short minutes some of the very best DMC battles over the years. Described as "a tribute to all the incredible DJ Champions from DMC's glorious past, DJ Shiftee has spent countless hours over the years studying masters like Roc Raida, Q-bert, Craze, and A-Trak." This is a wonderful video production that will appeal to not just turntablist fans but to anyone with a love of music.
