Super special thanks to the ever knowledgable Luis @ the hip-hop department of Amoeba Music San Francisco for always being so down to supply the Amoeblog with up to the moment news on what's popping at the SF store, new music- wise. For the second week in a row Luis has provided us with a Top Ten due to the wealth of releases (both new and reissues) dropping recently. Above you can see the chart in video and text forms, while below are a series of videos by several of the artists in this latest Top Ten chart.
In the number one position this week is the brand new joint from the hard working Rhymesayers emcee Brother Ali who, as Luis notes in the above video, is in some very good company on his anticipated new release. Like Brother Ali's label, Rhymesayers, it seems Def Jux can also do no wrong. And proof is in their latest compilation Definitive Jux Presents 4, which offers new music from Hail Mary Malon (Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic), Camu Tao (RIP), Cage, El-p, Mr. Lif, Despot, Chin Chin, and Yak Ballz.
In the number two slot is an up-and-coming artist, the vocalist/guitarist Andy Allo, who has been described by one critic as "somewhere between Corinne Bailey Rae and Amel Larrieux." She cites "the oldschool, the newschool, the famous and not so famous artists.. my mother" as her influences. Allo held a record release party earlier in the week in her Sacramento hometown for her debut UnFresh. For more info on this artist to watch, hit up her MySpace or Facebook. Below is a video from a few months back of her performing a brand new song live, "Second Best," and sounding a little like the late, great Minnie Riperton.
Also on the new chart are recently freed from jail artist John Forte and recently sentenced to two years in jail, Baton Rouge, Louisiana rapper Lil Boosie. (See the full TV news report of this story down below.) The tireless, prolific head of Stones Throw Records, Peanut Butter Wolf (PBW), has just released the 45 Live CD collection, which acts as a kind of tease (for vinyl fiends) for the forthcoming 7" singles series. Below is the PBW Amoeba Music interview. Also below is a recent interview with Brother Ali by London's Jump Off TV and the Beastie Boys' video "Intergalactic" off their recently reissued & remastered Hello Nasty album, which, along with Cage's Movies for the Blind on High Times Records and Blue Scholars' Beyani Redux is one of three reissues on this week's chart.
