Thanks to Luis at Amoeba Music San Francisco for this week's Hip-Hop Top Five of new hip-hop sellers with the Rhymesayers' Brother Ali in the top slot. His latest CD & DVD combo pack The Truth Is Here is a nine track CD plus a full-length DVD. The first official release in two years from the mid west emcee since he dropped his acclaimed The Undisputed Truth is meant to tide fans over until his official full-length album (produced by Ant of Atmosphere fame) drops in the Fall.
The nine tracks on The Truth Is Here include two sought after Brother Ali B-sides plus seven new & previously unreleased songs including the stellar track "Philistine David" and also "The Believer" -- a collaboration with Slug from Atmosphere. Meanwhile, the full length DVD part of the new package is concert footage of the artist's sold-out homecoming performance on June 7th, 2007 during The Undisputed Truth Tour at Minneapolis' First Avenue nightclub, as well as interviews, the music videos for "Take Me Home" and "Uncle Sam Goddamn," plus commentary by the artist himself.
Somalian artist K'NAAN, who has been popular at the other two Amoeba stores lately, is also doing well at Amoeba SF, where he is this week's number five. Other new entries include Keeley & Zaire present Ridin High, and the Bronx hip-hop stars Camp Lo (Sonny Cheeba + Geechi Suede), who have been putting it down for about 15 years now, and have just dropped the eleven track Stone and Rob Caught On Tape. Pete Rock and Styles P make an appearance on the album's lead single, "On Smash."
Another new Amoeba chart entry comes from the ever-prolific Bay Area rap star Messy Marv, whose latest mixtape CD Cake & Ice Cream Mixtape Vol. 2 is packed with the trademark Messy mob stylings of the popular gangsta rapper with (as usual) lots of cool cameos, including E-40, Jacka, I-Rocc, Gonzoe, and Smigg Dirtee.
The next couple of weeks will be busy for many music industry insiders and artists alike with SxSW (South By South West in Austin, TX) and WMC (Winter Music Conference in Miami, FL) happening back to back and both attracting a lot of DJs, emcees, and bands from all over.
With over 1800 performances planned for SxSW, there will be no way for attendees (including several current and former Amoebites) to catch more than a fraction of the action. And as anyone who has ever attended SxSW will tell you, it is just crazy, with artists performing at all hours of the day and in every conceivable location: pizza parlors, laundromats, barber shops, bowling alleys, you name it -- just about any public space can and will be transformed into a makeshift music venue.
One of many shows that looks well worth checking out is the Bay-to-LA themed show put on by Om Records, Damage Control Concepts, and BRMG & Serato and featuring Zion I & The Grouch, Mistah F.A.B., Trackademicks, Wallpaper, Eligh, Keelay & Zaire, Bayliens, Kev Choice, 40Love with DJ Platurn, J-Boogie, DJ Eleven, and Zion I's AmpLive solo -- all happening at The Gruv, 101 W 5th Street on Thursday, March 19th from 7PM to 2AM.
A good show at Birds Barber Shop at 6800 Burnet Rd on Thursday (19th) at 3PM will be going on for a few hours with performers including AmpLive with N.A.S.A., Busdriver, Kinghan and the Shrines, and Amanda Blank.
Another SxSW show is the We Put The ‘A' In Austin party with the A standing for Atlanta. This ATL new music showcase is not only free to get into but also promises "free drinks" and music from such emerging Atlanta artists as Killer Mike, Donnis, Izza Kizza, Proton, Hollyweerd, and Gip Plyaz. The event takes place Saturday, March 21st at Malverde at 400 W 2nd St in the heart Austin from 5PM - 8PM.
First we had an orchestra performing J-Dilla's music in recent weeks at a memorable LA concert put on by Mochilla, and now we have (drumroll) DJ Quik of "Born and Raised in Compton" fame performing with a full orchestra and special guests in concert in Anaheim tonight or should I say "Tonite" (as in the title of another early DJ Quik hit single).
The emcee/producer will grace the Grove stage tonite for a special performance billed as “Quik’s Groove” which is basically a jam session style performance that includes Quik performing with a full orchestra plus guests including Imani Walker and DJ Simon. DJ Quik is a legend both on the mic and behind the mixing board. As a producer his production credits include working with Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris and 2Pac. For more info and tix click here.
