Tres De Mayo-Pt.1

Cinco De Mayo Parade-Cypress Park
On Saturday I woke up to sounds of Mariachi music and Aztec drumming. Turns out there was a Cinco De Mayo parade on my street. There was little notice other than a few no parking signs on Cypress Ave. the night before.

Danza Azteca on Cypress & Roseview

The Grand Marshal was an Elvis Impersonator

Bike Riders: The new people in the barrio wanted to be a part of the parade and to push their agenda
about getting people not to drive their cars and ride their bikes instead. They asked the people watching the parade to join them in a bike ride. Nobody did except the neighborhood loco who rides his bike all day cause he's got nothing better to do. Everyone in the neighborhood knows this guy is crazy, but nobody told them. We all just snickered.

Tamborazos in the back of a truck. A horse follows them.

Vaqueros (Cowboys)

I'm not too big on parades. I usually avoid them at all costs, but since it was right outside my door, I figured I'd check it out. The parade seemed a bit unorganized and thrown together last minute. However, it was cool to hang with my neighbors and scream out a few "Que Viva Mexico!"s. Once the Victory Outreach float came by, I figured it was time to go home. Born-again Christians with megaphones wasn't really my idea of a Cinco De Mayo celebration. Besides, I was doing laundry.

OMG! The grand marshall was out shaking his thang a couple of weeks ago on Sunday at the Hollywood Farmers Market for 3 HOURS!!! With a wardrobe change in between. He was completely off key the whole time. LOL! Priceless, yo.

Yes it was great to see our cinco de mayo tradition still going on after people trying to make the community boycott it...i am very happy with the outcome...keep up the great work.

the flyers for the boycott, were distributed and were done by an outsider, who attempted to take away a tradition from the people that really live here. i am glad that there was a good turnout and people who are trying to bring down my nejghborhood, get the picture and try and help the neighborhoods where ther reside. they need the help, ya no sean metiches.

I really enjoyed the parade. I disagree with the little notice as I saw signs advertising the parade on the corner of Division and Cypress for a week or more. The Elvis was the celebrity grand marshall and he did a pretty good job performing at the carnival, he didn't sing off key at all and everybody loved him. The actual grand marshal was Xavier Montelongo Jr. a 15 time National Boxing Champ(I got his name off the program they passed out at the carnival). He did a boxing demonstration after the parade over at the carnival in the Cypress Park recreational center. If memory serves me correct, we didn't even have a parade last year, so it was a kinda cool to see it brought back this year, especially since we actually got to have horses in it which is a first for the Cypress Park Cinco de Mayo Parade. Hope they have them next year.

As modest as it may have been, people have told me this is the first time in four years The Cinco De Mayo Parade was surprisingly delightful! There were horses, The ELAC Husky Marching Band, a colorful folklorico dance group dancing to music on a flatbed, Giant Mardi Gras style puppets paving the street and yes our own King of Rock'n'Roll Donovan (Elvis) Chavez who served as Celebrity Grand Marshall. We had a champion boxer as Grand Marshall and two female champion boxers as Honorary Grand Marshalls. Ed P. Reyes led the line of dignitaries including Captain Bill Murphy of the NE Police Department. wrapping up the line-up was a mime on a unicycle, the Bike Oven, colorful clowns and all the other organizations in this great community! Our new and improved Cinco De Mayo Parade Committee will be meeting soon to make the 2009 parade bigger and better so come join our committee by calling me at (323)227-1133
