The Greatest

Sir Paul McCartney
I drove from San Francisco to LA on Wednesday to see Sir Paul McCartney rock Amoeba Hollywood.

I was not disappointed!

The show was AMAZING.

It was also a total whirlwind. I still can't quite believe that it happened at all. I was in the same room as Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr? Too much, too much! This picture captures pretty much how it all felt:

Flash Back: When I was 8 years old I stayed home sick from school one day.paul mccartney help the beatles hofner bass
VCRs had recently been invented. My mom rented me Help.  From that day on, I learned to spin records. I would play records from when I got home from school till dinner time and beyond, dancing around the coffee table for hours on a daily basis to With the Beatles, Help and Abbey Road. For years. Everything I know about music and creation and art I learned from The Beatles. I voraciously read every Beatles book I could get my hands on throughout my teenage years. I became a lifer.

Fast forward 20 years to Amoeba Hollywood.

After watching Paris Hilton exit the CNN studios across the street from Amoeba, paparazzi going wild (gawd, I was in LA!), I went out to the Mezzanine to watch Paul play his sound check.
paul mccartney let it be the beatles
He came out onstage to the 40 or so gawkers and smoothly/nonchalantly began to play "Drive My Car." Surreal.

When he trotted to the piano and began playing "The Long and Winding Road," I started to realize what was going on. This was PAUL MCCARTNEY. The songs that he wrote tap into some place so deep in my psyche, somewhere I didn't think I could reach anymore, that I haven't reached in so long I forgot it was there. And it made me feel SO GOOD, like nothing else mattered. Maybe that sounds simplistic or silly, but this music moves me like nothing else can. (Apparently at least 850 or so other people feel the same way, cause he pretty much brought the house down later in the evening.)

During the sound check I had the opportunity to go right almost up to the stage to watchpaul mccartney magical mystery tour the beatles what was going on. I swear Sir Paul and I made eye contact a couple of times. BIZARRE. I feel as though he is a member of my family, but we have never spoken, never met. I watched up close as he played "House of Wax" and other songs, old and new. He looked older, but he looked fantastic. It was PAUL MCCARTNEY.

Paul was so easy going during the sound check, joking with the small audience, and every song sounded just as good, if not better, than during the set. They hardly needed the check! They were getting loose I guess.  Paul's band mates are so quality. They handle some of the greatest songs ever written and they don't overdo it. When it comes to Beatles songs, I am so easily offended by covers and copies and the like and I appreciated so much how they glommed on to tradition and kept it close to the original recordingspaul mccartney 1963 the beatles cavern club hofner bass as much as possible.

I was mostly up close so I could see the Hofner Bass. It's totally mind blowing that he is still playing the same bass that's been with him since the Cavern Club. It looked...shiny, like it was not as old as it is.

When he had cleared off the stage to as much thunderous applause as about 60 people could possibly give, they started bringing the fans in.  These people had camped outside the store for about 3 days before the instore to ensure their spots. They are SUPER FANS. Each time the employees would bring in another row of campers, everyone would cheer, whistle and shout for them-- they had finally made it! The whole place was inspiring and the energy was through the roof!

When Ringo came out of the Green Room to take his place, the whole crowd started chanting his name.  I was in the Mezzanine watching from above and the whole energy of the crowd shifted toward him. He (rightfully) pointed to the stage and said he was there to see Paul. And there he was ... Paul popped out onstage right then, launching again into "Drive My Car." The whole experience was beyond unreal.

I found myself distracted by Ringo, continually watching him and wondering what the experience was like for him, what was running through his mind. I think I could tell what he liked by how much he bobbed his head. He was really into "Matchbox" and "Back in the USSR," among others.
paul mccartney amoeba music june 2007 instore
The highlight of the show for me was "I've Got a Feeling"... Paul may be in his mid 60s now but the energy he brings and the power in his voice is more like he is still in his 20s. I never thought I would hear that song played live by one of itspaul mccartney the beatles amoeba instore june 2007 writers ... INSANE. It was as close to Beatlemania as I will ever get, that's for sure. The crowd was going absolutely ape sh*t. I have never heard screaming like that before. Paul called the show his most surreal ever and wanted to take a moment to absorb the scene and what was going on. I doubt he's played an instore ever. I felt like the luckiest lady in town.

Paul got very choked up during "Here Today." He dedicated the song to John and George and Linda.  His voice broke several times, and afterward he said he had almost made it through but then looked out in the crowd and saw someone bawling so he lost it again. It was pretty moving to have Ringo in the crowd and hear everyone cheering for John and George and just to think about all the craziness they went through together and how terrible it is that they are not still all alive and together and celebrating the fact that they made it through all that together...

I had found this poster of John Lennon high on the wall to my right and throughout thpaul mccartney linda e performance I kept looking at it, wondering if there was any way he could look down (or whatever) and see us all. He'd probably think Paul was way over the top!

But it worked for me -- when Paul came out for the encore and played "Hey Jude" and "Let It Be" back to back I almost lost it. He has so many songs that have meapaul mccartney instore amoeba 2007 junent more to me than almost anything else and honestly, I just don't even know how to describe the show.

I know not everyone shares my belief in and love for The Beatles. That's of no matter to me. Seeing someone as seminal as Paul still kill it before a crowd, still run from "I'll Follow the Sun" to "Blackbird" to "Get Back" to "I Saw Her Standing There," (perhaps the most emotional song for me of the night)...Those songs hit me hard. They remind me of a time before adulthood... A time when joy was simple and music was just everything. I could care less if Paul wants to get a bit cheesy on me. I could care less if I sound a bit cheesy right now.

Everyone who knows, KNOWS. Can you dig it?

Very well written...Thanks for that insight to what was experienced in that room on Wednesday night, June 27,2007...a night that none that was there will ever forget.

Means so much to read this from someone as obviously as insane about The Beatles as a group, and as individuals, as you are. As I am. Thank you.

I think anybody who attended this show could not describe the enrgy and passion that flowed during Paul's set. My dad and I had just learned that Tuesday morning that he was going to appear at Amoeba, but by the time we found out he was going to appear, we assuemd that already tickets were already sold out. We were still going to Amoeba anyways to look around and meet some family later in that area. By the time we got there the line was still somewhat large still, so we decided to ask an employess if they stil had tickets. The clerk didn't know , but he told us to go outside and wait to see if any were available. Outside, the lady who was in charghe of the line asked if we already had numbers on our hands, and we didn't, so she told us to stand in line anyways. After waiting for about 30 minutes the smae lady counted the line and said," Cut off the line with the gentleman with the hat." I was the gentleman with the hat. Numbers 316& 316 were ours. Talk about a total fluke in all luck that could of happened, seeing Paul for free was more than being in the right place at the right time; it was the righteoutness of Beatle/McCartney fans getting a special treat after all the years of suppoirting him and it didn't get any better too. Oh yea,it did: Ringo was in the same room too. 'Nuff said...

Through what I can only attribute to some form of divine intervention, I won a pair of wristbands with only hours from the time the doors were to open at Amoeba Music on Wednesday, June 27th. I knew this show was going to be nothing short of an historical event and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I somehow got in! In the past, I've paid mucho bucks to "see" Paul in large arenas. So to get to see him so up-close for the price of standing in the sun for a few hours was truly a blessing. Paul has been my favorite since I was 10 years old and he always will be. Thank you Amoeba... and thank you Paul for yet another memory I will cherish forever.

I have been a fan of Paul from the beginning and ever since (1964?)...If only that poser, Kenny G, and his babe-unit had not been on the VIP list...now my admiration for Sir McCartney has dimmed a bit. Those were two seats that should have gone to genuine music fans.

I was one of the unfortunate many who was "a day late & a dollar short" I have been a fan since the sixties, & will always be a fan.
Maybe another time I might be fortunate to see him in an intimate setting as this. I missed meeting him @ the book signing in Westwood by about 15 people ahead of me, on that one. So maybe next time, 3rd will be a charm!!! He could not have picked a better venue, than Amoeba!!! Love You guys, & Love You Paul & Ringo, Keep Giving em "Helen Wheels"

To Jazzwoman53: Maybe no one needs to be in the presence of a real musician, a true legend such as Paul -- more than someone like Kenny G. I mean, that dude needs it bad. Maybe there is a God after all, and it was God who scooped little Kenny G up and set him down in Amoeba, murmuring ... "Lean something, young man who has many horns that hang from the side of your mouth. Learn something!"

I was one of the lucky ones to see Paul McCartney on the 27th at Amoeba!!! And...the video crew interviewed me for the official McCartney video segment!! See below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxmwjfNbeRA (at about 1 minute) I had just flown in from Moscow the day before, so the whole thing felt very surreal to me. Growing up in the Soviet Union and learning English by translating every Beatle song I had on my compilation bootleg tape, the Beatles were just as unreachable as the next galaxy, some sort of a dream. I was in the second row in Amoeba, 20 feet away when Macca was at the piano. When I saw him at the Staples in 2002 (my first time ever), I couldn't stop crying. It was incredible. But Tuesday, it was even more magical. Among many others, he played "Here Today" (song written for John Lennon, but also dedicated to George Harrison and Linda McCartney). Watching Paul get so emotional so close to all of us was just too much. My tears just rolled and rolled. It will be the day I will never forget.

Anyway. I just had to share! Hugs, Marina :) http://www.MarinaV.com

I was very disappointed. I am a huge Paul fan. However, I was not one of the lucky people who got to see him. The problem was that the website showed that tickets were to be given out on Wednesday @ 12:30 pm. By Wednesday morning, all passes were gone as they were given out the previous day. I just wish that current information would have been posted. I tried everything humanly possible to get tickets and I was left with nothing. Amoeba employees told me that no more tickets were going to be allowed and therefore I would waste my time if I arrived there. I come to find out later that many of the people there were able to hear the concert from outside. I missed a once in a lifetime opportunity simply becasue I followed the rules. I would hope that in the future, all current info would be provided so as to avoid fans missing what I am so sorry I missed.

what's with this site? I posted a message on July 3rd and it's no longer there. I kept waiting for a reply and it was there two days ago.
Amoeba, are you deleting messages that are slightly critical of you? (regarding assigning a non-amoeba employee to officially write down the order of the fans in line and then having said person and her group give cuts in line to their friends and push other fans out of the way including me, a disabled woman. I had such fond thoughts of you for making my deam come true and was planning a huge buying trip there in the next couple of days.
I had notified you when you took our names Tuesday afternoon that I was disabled and could not stand for long periods of time and would need some assistance. Karen told me they would get me a folding chair or something. Thank goodness I kept a small stool with me. When we got to the door, there was no mention of accomadating my disability, no one seemed to remember. I should have brought my wheelchair and demanded that I be put in a place where I could see. Shame on you amoeba! You allow fans in line to control the crowd and ignore state law in regards to the disabled. I thought you were better than this.

By the way, this portion of your site is extremely hard to access. I wonder now if this is designed to be this way. No one could have managed that event without some criticism. The comments I saw earlier about Amoeba employees being given the spots in the center aisle are also gone. McCartney's people need to be aware of this. signed former amoeba fan and purchaser.

Yo, Katie, you're reading the wrong blog. The comments are still up here:
http://www.amoeba.com/blog/2007/06/jamoeblog/-amoeba-a-great-shop-or-wot-sir-paul.html#comments
Trust me, I know what it's like to be cripped out and overlooked, but if there's anywhere in the world that I have gotten respectful treatment, it's Amoeba. Let the black helicopters land, ma'am. Read the other blog. This aint no walmart, this aint no dick cheney, the criticism stays with the praise because nothing runs smooth and everything has fuck-ups. If you really are a 'former fan of Amoeba' i have to say that loss is deeply yours as well as Amoeba. Cause you aint never gonna find a place like this where the music and the art is what matters, where the OWNERS jim and karen deeply care about the customers, employees and the music. If you are really a former Amoeba fan, I feel sad for you, because snafus and fuckups aside, where exactly do you think you are going to go for this kind of love and respect for all + a company that COULD take all of it's profits and just cha-ching all the way to the bank, but instead GIVES IT TO CHARITY ALL THE TIME. This is the place, human frailty notwithstanding, THIS is the place where we need to save. This is where humanity and art still matters, and I am saying this to you as someone whose partner was shoved out of the way at an SF event by tourists - IN HER FUCKING WHEELCHAIR, as well as someone (me) who carries a chair cane to events where I know that I can't handle the full weight of my wheelchair alone ... so I bring my chair-a-cane. Having had the pleasure of making Karen's acquaintance over many visits to this store, I will be the one to tell you this: your remarks cut deep, and that is one woman who is actively killing herself trying to run a massive business based on ethics, heart and fairness. I am deeply sorry for what you had to experience, and I know your words wound all amoebites for your happiness is EXACTLY what they live for. But as someone who can't even get a damn seat on a bus barely full -- I give insane amounts of leeway to these peeps who bravely took on easily one of the biggest fucking instores America has ever seen. Take care, and please go and see that those comments that you thought were deleted are still there in billyjam's blog. This aint no Fox news, ma'am. I write a lot here because you are HEARD and you matter, and trust me, Amoeba loves you. Even my crunkled ass and useless legs, they are there for me as much as can. But this was SO HUGE that it kinda trampled everyone, sadly. But beautifully. Were you there? Not to get too deep, but did you get it in? I couldn't make it from NoCal and may regret it my whole life. Take care, thanks for your honesty.

Whoa do I feel like a fool! Should I add "on a hill?" Having been about 9 or 10 when the Beatles hit America I can only claim my age as defense for my stupidity. I am not very computer literate. In fact, this was the first time I have ever posted to a site such as this, or in fact even seen one. The computer in our home is upstairs. Although I can still walk, I am not always so steady on my feet, and a spiral staircase sometimes seems just too hard. so I do not keep up with the computer. It has never really been a problem until after Paul's show when I felt an intense need to reconnect with other people there that night

I did really try to find if there was another space where my comment was still up. Even my husband, who does movie sound with computers had trouble finding it. He has now bookmarked it for me so that my otherwise brilliant, gorgeous, Paul loving self can navigate it.

If you read my original postings, you'll remember that I singled out Karen for her wonderful ways of dealing with us all and I still mean it. I had planned to go to Amoeba either yesterday or today to take a small gift to her and the male owner (are they a couple?) and to see what other Paul treasures I could acquire. I will try for tomorrow or Sunday. It's a trek, though not that big a one. In L.A., going from East of Pasadena (Monrovia) to Hollywood or the Westside is not that Easy though on the days I made it there for the wristband (Yes, I did get in) I only broke about 247 traffic laws. I was positive that if one more car got in my way, the person in front of me in line would be declared the last person in line. And one more tradegy like that was more than I could take.

I am so glad you put me in my place and can I ever relate to the things you said. I have only had these problems (with my health) for the past 5 years or so. I have not received an official MS diagnosis, although that or something like it is what is expected. My favorite place to go used to be Disneyland. I would go alone often and just sit and watch the happiness. The walking required to do this made that impossible, so I used to rent a wheelchair or motorized cart. One Christmas, I was T-boned so badly by a fellow park goer, that I went into momentary shock. Disney employees are not known for their consideration of the disabled, and while trying to get out of the park, I was put in this mass of people also trying to get out only I was three feet below them all. The carts do not have a variable speed or a brake, they either go or they don't. and if the crowd in front of you stops suddenly, your cart does not and heels get run over. Another park goer (whom I did not run over) at one point just stopped and kicked me. I rarely go there anymore.

When I got the word of the Amoeba concert, I though I can't do that. Three days in line and a standing only show. My husband's boss did go on Monday, and called fairly early Tuesday and said to get my butt over there. so we did. If there is ever a chance for you to do this, you just must!

it has changed my like. maybe even saved my life. i write this in small case because before that concert, I had become a very small person, cowering from what life was dishing out to me in rapid fire succession. First came the early signs of my illness which began to affect my work (stained glass artist) which sometimes I could no longer do because of physical symptoms and sometimes because I could no longer do what was required to set up my "shop" at the fine art shows where I made my portion of our living.

Next, I believe was a lawsuit involving neighbors who had attached themselves onto out sewer line, just at a time when our income was decreasing due to the the above. We couldn't sell if we needed to and had to fight to gain what was ours ( 2 years later we did). Next was the lawyer, recommended by another neighbor, who was most probably taking kickbacks from the previous neighbor's insurance company he handled the case so badly.

Next, our house caught fire, caused by the electrician recommended by the same neighbor who recommended the lawyer. Whole house had to be rewired. During my peak season. How to pay? Can't spend too much time worrying about that though cause my mother and my father in law have both just entered into their death spirals. Many hospitalizations. Many scares. Both still alive today (I think) though barely.

Enduring this, then animal control kills our cat. within minutes of finding it, in violation of state law. Nothing killed the cat other than the injection. Our city government attempts to cover this up, I finally get the DEA involved who find many transgressions. but they are still here more than a year later, although thankfully they are about to be replaced. Trying to deal with the above when mom goes into final phases. Have to all but give up my business and move her into our home. She is extremely unstable. I have to all but give up my business and stay with her 24/7. Our second oldest dog becomes one of the first victims of the pet food poisioning and dies 5 days before Christmas. Our oldest dog, age 15 dies the day after Valentines.

Still walking and talking but have long since cared about much. Mom inexplicably turn on us and we have to have her leave our house. That relationship now most probably severed. Father in law has several strokes and death may be near. But you must read on........

Mom freaked out a few weeks before Paul's concert. The strokes can just after. I'm in line and overhear a remark and decide to investigate. It takes an hour and a half of pretty much standing in one place which is agony for me (and is also where the "stripped creature and her lot push me out of the way" and then the miracle began to happen. Paul's car arrives at the stage entrance. He gets out and waves and poses to that side of the car. He then turns and locks eyes on me. I swear to you, the clouds parted, the sun shone directly on him and the angels started singing. I could only grasp my hands and smile.

Paul was and is the gold standard of men to me. Every man I have ever had a serious relationship with or a relationship at all for that matter has resembled him. There were to be, no blondes for me. And there he was, looking into my eyes. Yeah, he was followed by Davy Jones, David Cassidy and Rick Springfield. But they were so far below Paul, I even met and know some of the "Rock stars" that as my friend puts it "sealed your sexual fantasies forever". They were not Paul, He was beyond my grasp. Yet there he was, At the most ten feet away.

We went into the show, the band came out and the miracle was complete.
The stool I had taken in to rest myself was used only once. Once he began to sing, I had to stand atop it in order to better realize what was happening. I think this gave me a slight advantage and put my head and torso in an elevated position and I don't dare believe he couldn't take his eyes off me. More rational is the thought that
my slightly elevated status gave him an eyeline to focus on but his gaze definitely came back to me again and again. During the beginning of the set, the miracle was clear to me. He had restored the light to my eyes. Anyone who has known bad times knows whatit means to have dead eyes. I had them before the show ,I no longer do. Whatever life wants to throw at me now, I think I can handle it. My husband is so grateful that I think he would bequeath me to Paul if that is what Paul wanted. I have since reconnected with old friends, one of whom it turns out works for Gibson guitars and works with Paul on his guitar needs.

There are those who probably would say, no single man should have that kind of influence om your life. I would add, unless of course that man is Paul McCartney.

Thank you so much for correcting me. I stand humbled and slightly ashamed. I did feel slightly depressed today thinking Amoeba had wronged me. I will sleep well tonight and though they are closed my eyes will continue to be filled with light. If you have the slighest chance, you MUST GO!

with love, humiliation, and gratitude, Katie Payton

I wish what everyone could understand, as we walk down the street, buy or sell a CD, get groceries or sit in traffic: so many of us ARE Katie Payton. So many of us are in so much pain, dealing with so much loss, barely able to walk - with our deadened eyes. If we could all remember that (without letting it crush us), we could remember to be kind to one another and do small nice things for each other. I am glad that Katie came back and read that stuff, but there's no shame for her. The world seems full of mean and greedy people, and Katie got to escape that for a while with her hero, her shining light Paul. Thank you to whoever tracked down the post on the other blog, and just one more time: thanks to Karen for 'carrying water, chopping wood.' You remind us all, without ever pointing or saying anything at all, how easy it is to just be humans for one another and that it really doesn't take anything from you: it actually fills you. She should try to impart those lessons to some of the people running the Amoeba stores up north: they could use some joy and caring.

I would have to say that this was the single greatest day of my life. I stayed in LA for three days starting the Monday before the show. June 27th was my 18th birthday. I made a sign out of the "Grat-ti-tude 4 Paul" sign saying "Today's my birthday!". Paul read it right after singing That was Me and before Blackbird. He sang me Happy Birthday! It was the greatest moment of my life.

Posted by Jorge on August 15, 2007 at 09:22pm

Great to see a posting from Jorge. I was in line next to him (I was number 68). Also saw Cathy's posting on another page (she was number 67). So I decided I should post something too! Can't really add anything not already said by others (except I DID feel really special when Paul sang HEY JUDE), but I also want to express my sincere gratitude to Amoeba for their unbelievable hospitality during that crazy, wonderful week. I strongly disagree with anyone who has complaints about the way anything was handled. Being one of the ones camped out starting on Monday evening, I am grateful to everyone who helped maintain our order of arrival because I saw numerous instances of latecomers with lower numbers trying to "move up". So again, my deepest gratitude to everyone who helped maintain order for such an historic event. I proudly wear my Amoeba Music 6/27/07 shirt! Definitely a "top shop"!

Posted by Jude on August 28, 2007 at 11:55pm

Hey Jude! Nice to hear from you.

Posted by Jorge on September 9, 2007 at 04:05pm

Wow, Jude and Jorge good to see you again. The employees at Amoeba did their damndest to help us out in line whenever they could. The person writing down the numbers was not an Amoeba employee but a fan of Paul's. Amoeba did not ask her to do this, it was a suggestion that somebody take control of this from Paul's website. When Amoeba found out, they decided the system was fair and worked with her on it. Had it not been for that, there would have been chaos. This was handled very well and probably the best show I have ever been to in my life.

Posted by Cathy Krager, aka number 67 on November 25, 2007 at 03:37pm

Yeah, she was a fan. I have no direct complaints against her, except she was with the group which I have previously referred to as the stripped creature. I'll call her "Jane". Jane was the one who pushed me pushed me out of her way at the stage entrance when I had been the first one waiting there. She pushed me away to accomodate her Asian friend who arrived late Show day. He was three rows in front of me with Jane and curiously, the bootleg of the concert is only available through Japan( I think or a very close Asian country) I have to say I really believe the girl, Brenda I think, handing out the numbers, and Jane had previous contact with this guy and arranged to let him in their place on line for whatever consideration. I don't know what but he was charging $50 a copy for the bootlegs. This is why I said earlier I don't know if it's a good idea to let a non-employee of Amoeba handle the line. Amoeba was great aside from this and I have spent hundreds of dollars there since. The only other sad thing that gets me is that the person in front of me in line got the last T-shirt. I was #242. It's odd. I guess the VIP crowd who didn't wait got them first and then all of us who waited in line got what was left. I'd love to have that T-shirt! I looked on line and there was one available once. I asked Karen about it after the concert, and she gave me a in store poster, but I wish I had that shirt.Don't know if this posting is permitted with it's reference to bootlegs but for what it's worth, I'll try. I really believe that these fans (Brenda and Jane) are ripping Paul off and in turn ripping us all off because if you've heard the bootleg( or if you haven't )Paul is ruined by a close by fan singing along at the top of his lungs. This guy should never sing again. NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH, NAH NAH NAH NAH, Hey Don't sing! And don't buy the bootleg!
