Black Rose: A Rock Legend (CD)
Thin Lizzy
Amoeba Review
Frankie Delmane 11/01/2010
Just in case the youth of England made the mistake of forgetting about hard rockers in the face of punk, Thin Lizzy reacted with a record that demonstrates they could cut the punks at their own game by producing one of their most compact, blunt, street-tough records. Guitarist Gary Moore replaced Brian Robertson on this LP, signaling a trend that would continue until their demise. The record is a slam in the face, unapologetic, in your face rock record that is closest to Jailbreak's creative high mark, putting these guys in a class all their own, beyond any neat categories besides "rock". The full blast of a tune like "Toughest Street In Town" is case-in-point why this record rules. Gum chewing on the corner, bad ass in the city, back smack rock ‘n’ roll that'll rattle the devil’s teeth. With a song like "S&M", which not only rocks hard but you can also dance to it! Thin Lizzy, with famed David Bowie producer Tony Visconti at the helm, made an enduring, full bodied classic that will easily be on minds and turntables for centuries to come - a representation of what human expression can accomplish.
