Beta Love (LP)
Ra Ra Riot
Amoeba Review
01/28/2013
Ra Ra Riot’s latest is in more in line with Discovery, frontman Wesley Miles’ 2009 collaboration with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, emphasizing synth-heavy danciness over the kind of aerobic indie pop the band previously made. But with the buoyant basslines, bouncing drum beats and Miles high-flying vocals everpresent, Ra Ra Riot fans should soon find themselves comfortable in these new surroundings. Beta Love is not as ’80s fetishizing as its name would suggest and even aims for a modern pop-radio, eurodisco-influenced sound on songs like “Dance With Me.” But caffeinated riffs and digital handclaps do take “Binary Mind” to A-ha territory, sounding like it came from the Wreck-it Ralph soundtrack. When they’re able to mesh their sounds well, as on the arena-friendly title track, Beta Love reaches a new kind of glory for the band.
