Media Condition: Very Good CD Comments: Review Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs, released in 2005, is only the second album by Andrew Bird as a solo artist. A pleasantly surprising style change from his first solo album, Weather Systems, this record seems to affirm a more ambitious musical direction. In fact, with the song, “Skin Is, My” - a reworking of “Skin” from the earlier work - it is as if Bird was as surprised as anyone by how well the first album worked out, and decided to put out a bigger, better, more focused version. The music here is mellow and sometimes bittersweet, but far from depressing. The layered instrumentals stand out, including some amazingly skillful whistling, most notably in “Masterfade”. The up-tempo feel of “Fake Palindromes” impresses with its energetic build up of mandolin and guitars. -AmyJo Steele		Buy $9.99
Media Condition: Good CD Comments: Review Andrew Bird’s The Mysterious Production of Eggs is an audio exploration of the mysteries of childhood, creativity and science — you know, the small stuff. The record soars with the excitement of discovery, but grounds itself in the melancholy that comes from discovering that every answer comes with a new set of questions. Bird -- the classically trained violinist, guitarist, singer-songwriter and whistler extraordinaire -- left his Chicago home for a farm downstate in Illinois, converted his barn into a studio, and emerged with a new sound and vision in 2003’s Weather Systems. The barn plays a role here, too, as the original material was recorded in its creaky, draughty ambience. With the exception of drummer Kevin O'Donnell and harmony vocalist Nora O'Connor, Bird is responsible for all the instrumentation and singing. Like his one-man live act, Bird makes ample use of tape loops, employing sweeping lines or plucking pizzicato on his violin, and then building on the loops with guitar, glockenspiel and that amazing whistle. What emerges here is a mix of rock styles in the dramatic vein ("Opposite Day," "Fake Palindromes"), noir-folk ballads with gypsy and jazz accents ("Measuring Cups," "Sovay"), or Weather Systems-like soundscapes ("01," “12"). It all makes for an exciting and varied sonic tableau, one whose narrative imagery -- "Don Quixotes in their B-17s," "electro-static rain," and "good kids sprouting horns” – provides half the thrills. Bird scrapped the entire record two different times, deciding the first version was too rock-oriented and the second too Weather Systems-like.
