The Pet Shop Boys have been long established as one of the premiere dance club staples, a synth-pop group sure to incite a terrific mixture of dramatic dancing and Gen X nostalgia. This is based, however, on only a thimbleful of songs—the Pet Shop Boys’ catalog is far more colorful when not limited to “West End Girls.” The 1995 double-disc Alternative shows the entire breadth of what these English blokes have done. Featuring all B-sides, Alternative becomes remarkable in that they weren’t singles to begin with. The bitchy “Bet She’s Not Your Girlfriend”—which is allegedly written in response to a photo of George Michael with a woman in the days before he came out—is a fun gem of a song. “Don Juan,” “Paninaro” and “Miserablism” also stand out.
